The fort area of this city, also known as Daak-Gharh is thought to have been built by Raja Krishnachandra of Nadia. Babla is one of famous place for pilgrims. Rasjatra is a famous festival of Shantipur town. The city is famous for having numerous social and cultural organizations and also local newspaper. Among them Alokpat, Santipur Science Club,"Samajer Pratichhabi",Protibadi Chetona, Nadiar Jugobarta and Santipur Biborton are famous.
