Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim (better known as Sheikh Selim), is a Bangladeshi member of parliament and a member of the standing committee of Bangladesh Awami League party. [1] [2] [3]

Early life

Selim is the nephew of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, former President of Bangladesh. He is the younger brother of Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani founder of Jubo League. [4] He is a cousin of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. [5]

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Bengali revolutionary, founding father of Bangladesh

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman ;, shortened as Sheikh Mujib or just Mujib, was a Bangladeshi politician and statesman. He is the founding father of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. He served as the first President of Bangladesh and later as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh from 17 April, 1971 until his assassination on 15 August, 1975. He is considered to be the driving force behind the independence of Bangladesh. He is popularly dubbed with the title of Bangabandhu by the people of Bangladesh. He became a leading figure in and eventually the leader of the Awami League, founded in 1949 as an East Pakistan-based political party in Pakistan. Mujib is credited as an important figure in efforts to gain political autonomy for East Pakistan and later as the central figure behind the Bangladesh Liberation Movement and the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. Thus, he is regarded Jatir Janak or Jatir Pita of Bangladesh. His daughter Sheikh Hasina is the current leader of the Awami League and also the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani was a Bangladeshi politician. He was the nephew of the founding father of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the founder of Mujib Bahini one of the major guerrilla forces of the Bangladesh Liberation War. He founded Jubo League the youth wing of Bangladesh Awami League.

The Bangladesh Awami Jubo League commonly known as the Jubo League, is the first youth organization of Bangladesh founded by Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani. It is the youth wing of Bangladesh Awami League. Jubo league's current chairman is Mohammad Omar Faroque Chowdhury and General Secretary is Md. Harunur Rashid. They were elected on the sixth congress of Juboleague held on 14 July 2012.

Career

Salim is the current parliamentary representative for the a constituency of Gopalganj-2. He is a Presidium member of Bangladesh Awami League. [6] He has won parliamentary elections from Gopalganj-2 seven times. [7] He served as the Minister for Health and Family Welfare in the First Sheikh Hasina Cabinet. [8] He is the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare Ministry. [9]

Gopalganj-2 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad of Bangladesh since 1991 by Sheikh Fazlul Karim of the Awami League.

First Sheikh Hasina Cabinet

The first Hasina cabinet was the Government of Bangladesh during the 7th legislative session of the Jatiya Sangsad following the 1996 general election, and left office on 15 July 2001.

Controversy

On 23 April 2008 Bangladesh Anti Corruption Commission sued him for corruption with Ramna Police Station. He secured bail from Bangladesh High Court on 16 September 2008. [10] Bangladesh High Court in September stayed proceeding of the case against Selim. On 24 October 2010 Bangladesh Supreme Court stayed the High Court order allowing the case to proceed. [11]

The assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the killing of the president of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and almost his entire family. It took place in the early hours of 15 August 1975, when a group of Bangladesh Army personnel went to his residence and killed him, during a coup d'état.

The 2006–2008 Bangladeshi political crisis began as a caretaker government (CTG) assumed power at the end of October 2006 following the end of term of the Bangladesh National Party administration. Under the constitution, the CTG manages the government during the interim 90-day period and parliamentary elections. Political conflict began with the appointment of a Chief Advisor, a role which devolved to the President, Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed, because of the failure by the major parties to agree on a candidate from among five considered. The interim period was marked from the beginning by violent protests initiated by the Awami League, with 40 people killed and hundreds injured in the first month. The Bangladesh National Party had its own complaints about the process and the opposition.

Syed Modasser AliFRCS, FRCOpth is an ophthalmic surgeon from Bangladesh and was the Health and Family Welfare and Social Welfare adviser to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, from 2009 to 2013. He is the founder of Mojibunnessa Eye Hospital, the first registered eye hospital in Bangladesh and founding editor-in-chief of the Bangladesh Ophthalmic Journal, the first peer-review ophthalmic journal in Bangladesh. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of Community Ophthalmology and his book titled Community Ophthalmology, published in 1985, is considered to be the first textbook on the subject by the British Journal of Ophthalmology. He is a recipient of Bangladesh National Personality Research Centre's Freedom Fighter Award for his services during the Bangladesh Liberation War. He was also an Executive Board member of the World Health Organization. In 2013, Ali was named as one of the 20 most innovative surgeons alive by healthcare education website Healthcare-Administration-Degree.net.

The 2004 Dhaka grenade attack took place at an anti-terrorism rally organised by Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue on 21 August 2004. The attack left 24 dead and more than 300 injured. The attack was carried out at 5.22 PM after Sheikh Hasina the leader of opposition finished addressing a crowd of 20,000 people from the back of a truck. The attacks targeted Awami League president Sheikh Hasina. Hasina was injured in the attack.

Lutfozzaman Babar is a Bangladeshi politician who served as a minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh under Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, as a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

Salman Fazlur Rahman is a Bangladeshi industrialist who is also a member of the Jatiya Sangsad. He was ranked 1685th on the list of billionaires in the world published by Beijing-based Hurun Gobal in 2017. He is the current vice chairman of Beximco Group, one of the largest conglomerates in Bangladesh. Since 2009, he has been serving as the private sector development affairs adviser to the Bangladesh Awami League President Sheikh Hasina. Currently he is acting as the president of several trade bodies including Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO). 2018 Bangladeshi general election 2018 Jatiya Sangsad election

General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. The elections were marred by violence and claims of vote rigging. Opposition leader Kamal Hossain rejected the results, calling it "farcical" and demanding fresh elections to be held under a neutral government. The Bangladesh Election Commission said it would investigate reported vote-rigging allegations from "across the country." The election saw the use of electronic voting machines for the first time.

Sheikh Rehana Siddiq is a Bangladesh Awami League politician. She is the younger sister of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. She is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She is mother of Tulip Siddiq who is a British Labour Party politician and elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Hampstead and Kilburn at the 2015 general election.

Mustafizur Rahman was a Bangladeshi Army general who served as the Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army from December 1997 until December 2000.

15 August 1975 Bangladesh coup d'état was a military coup launched by mid ranking army officers in Bangladesh on 15 August 1975. The officers planned to remove the secular government of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman with an Islamic government led by Khandaker Mushtaque Ahmed. Sheikh Mujib and most of his family members were killed in the coup.

Sheikh Lutfur Rahman was a serestadar, an officer responsible for record-keeping at the Gopalganj civil court in British India. His son Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the founder of Bangladesh. Lutfar's father Sheikh Abdul Hamid was the descendant of Sheikh Borhanuddin and Sheikh Qudratullah. He married Sayera Khatun. Lutfar was a religious Muslim. He is grandfather of Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina.

Panchanan Biswas is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and the incumbent Member of Parliament from Khulna-1. He is one of the few Hindu Members of parliament in Bangladesh.

The 2000s was a decade of the Gregorian calendar that began on January 1, 2000, and ended on December 31, 2009. For Bangladesh this decade was characterized by strife among the political parties over the caretaker government system for managing the national elections. Continued rapid urbanisation and globalization influenced the socio-economic and cultural activities of the country in this decade.
