Sherlock & Co. is a British audio drama podcast that reimagines Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories in a modern setting, presented through the perspective of Dr. John Watson. [1] The podcast follows Watson, portrayed as a true crime podcaster and former British Army doctor, as he recounts his adventures with the brilliant detective Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock & Co. was created by Joel Emery, directed by Adam Jarrell, and features Paul Waggott as Dr. John Watson and Harry Attwell as Sherlock Holmes. [2]

Contents

The podcast was produced by Holy Smokes Audio and launched in October 2023, with episodes released weekly. By returning to the episodic nature of Doyle's original tales, Sherlock & Co. hopes to appeal to fans of the classic detective genre.

The show was developed in partnership with Goalhanger known for its history and politics programming. [3]

Format

Each episode is narrated by Dr. John Watson, who serves as the editor and host of the podcast, echoing his role as Doyle’s chronicler of Holmes' cases. Watson's perspective provides a firsthand account of the mysteries, presenting the stories as recordings for a true crime audience.

[5] [6] [4] The podcast got shortlist in the fiction category at the [British Podcast Awards 2024]. The stories of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle have been very popular as adaptations for the stage, and later film, and still later television. The four volumes of the Universal Sherlock Holmes (1995) compiled by Ronald B. De Waal lists over 25,000 Holmes-related productions and products. Sherlock Holmes has long been a popular character for pastiche, Holmes-related work by authors and creators other than Arthur Conan Doyle. Their works can be grouped into four broad categories:

Many writers make references to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous literary creation, the detective Sherlock Holmes, and these often become embedded within popular culture. While Holmes exists predominantly in the context of Victorian-era London, he has been mentioned in such outre contexts as the 22nd century or hunting aliens or supernatural enemies. Sherlock is a British mystery crime drama television series based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective stories. Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the show stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson. Thirteen episodes have been produced, with four three-part series airing from 2010 to 2017 and a special episode that aired on 1 January 2016. The series is set in the present day in which it aired. Sherlock Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes are two British series of Sherlock Holmes adaptations for television produced by the BBC in 1965 and 1968 respectively. The 1965 production, which followed a pilot the year before, was the second BBC series of Sherlock Holmes adaptations, after one starring Alan Wheatley in 1951. The role of Holmes was played by Douglas Wilmer in 1965, and Peter Cushing in 1968. Nigel Stock starred in both series as Dr. Watson.
