The Erzya-Moksha Autonomy was a name of an administrative division of the Russian SFSR, Soviet Union approved by Executive Committee of Erzya-Moksha Autonomous oblast before July 16, 1928. The Executive Committee name didn't change till 1930. The conventional name of the Oblast was changed to Mordvin Okrug on July 16, 1928. The administrative centre first was planned to be the oldest Oblast city Temnikov but it was established in Saransk because of the railroad absence in Temnikov.
Shoksha is an ethnographic group of Erzya people. It is named after the village of Shoksha in Tengushevsky District, Mordovia. They live mostly in Mordovia, Tengushevsky District and Torbeyevsky District. They speak the Shoksha dialect, a dialect of Erzya language formed under the influence of Moksha language because for a long time Shokshas have been living surrounded by Mokshas. The ethnonym is relatively recent.
Shoksha quartzite, Shoksha porphyry, or crimson quartzite is quartzose sandstone of deep red color variously described as purple or crimson resembling true porphyry. It is named after Shoksha, Karelia, a village in Prionezhsky District, Karelia, Russia, close to its deposits. Currently it is mined mostly in the nearby miner's settlement of Kvartzitny by Lake Onega. Its shades of red color is due to iron oxides.
