Sjøgata (Norwegian: 'Sea Street') is a historic and picturesque area running along the mouth of the river Vefsna in Mosjøen, a town in the traditional district of Helgeland in the county of Nordland, Norway. Sjøgata, with the largest concentration of listed wooden buildings in northern Norway, is a popular tourist site. Sjøgata is an area of piers, storehouses, boathouses, a number of galleries and several restaurants, together with the Vefsn museum and Kulturverkstedet, a culture workshop with exhibitions. Sjøgata has been awarded the St. Olav Rose, the Norwegian Heritage Seal of Quality. Fru Haugans Hotel, located on the end of Sjøgata, is the oldest hotel in North Norway dating back to a former trading post established in 1794. [1]

Vefsna (Norwegian), also known as Vaapstenjeanoe (Southern Sami) or Vapstälven (Swedish), is the largest river in Nordland county, Norway. It is 163 kilometres (101 mi) long and drains a watershed of 4,122 square kilometres (1,592 sq mi). Its headwaters lie in the mountains of Børgefjell National Park at the lake Simskardvatnet. The river runs through the municipalities of Hattfjelldal, Grane, and Vefsn. The southern parts of the river are sometimes called the river Susna. The river flows north, not far from the Swedish border, and some of the minor tributaries come from Sweden. At the town of Mosjøen, the river discharges into the Vefsnfjord. The Laksforsen waterfall lies along its course.

Mosjøen is the oldest town in the Helgeland region, with only the town of Bodø being older within Nordland county. The town is also the administrative centre of Vefsn Municipality. The old village of Mosjøen was declared a ladested in 1875. It was also a town municipality from 1875 until 1961 when it was merged into Vefsn, losing its status as a town (ladested). It is also a former garrison town and customs place. In 1998, the urban area of Mosjøen was declared to be a town once again. People from Mosjøen are referred to using the demonym "mosjøværing".
