The 495-square-kilometre (191 sq mi) municipality existed from 1926 until its dissolution in 2020 when it was merged into Tjeldsund Municipality. It was part of the Central Hålogaland region, just southeast of the city of Harstad. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Evenskjer. Other villages included Grovfjord, Renså, Sandstrand, and Tovik.
Artscape Nordland is an international art project that aims to bring art to people where they live, art museums being few and far apart in the sparsely populated county of Nordland. The first phase of the project lasted from 1992 until 1998. The project included 33 sculptures by 33 artists from 18 different countries placed in 32 municipalities in Nordland county plus 1 municipality in Troms county. Additional artwork was installed in 2009, 2010, and 2015, bringing the total to 36 sculptures installed.

The village is located along the Tjeldsundet strait about 25 km (16 mi) south of the town of Harstad. European route E10 passes just to the north of the village of Evenskjer. The 0.86-square-kilometre (210-acre) village has a population (2023) of 822 and a population density of 956 inhabitants per square kilometre (2,480/sq mi).
Grov (Norwegian) or Roabadállu (Northern Sami) is a village in Tjeldsund Municipality in Troms county, Norway. The village is located 12 km (7.5 mi) east of the village of Tovik along the Grovfjorden at a very narrow point in the fjord. It is about 60 km (37 mi) southeast of the town of Harstad and about 71 km (44 mi) west of the town of Narvik. The Moelva and Gårdselva rivers flow through the village into the fjord. The 0.61-square-kilometre (150-acre) village has a population (2023) of 411 and a population density of 674 inhabitants per square kilometre (1,750/sq mi).

Astafjord is a former municipality in Troms county, Norway. The 310.1-square-kilometre (119.7 sq mi) municipality existed from 1926 until its dissolution in 1964. The area now makes up the eastern part of Tjeldsund Municipality, surrounding the Grovfjorden. The administrative center of the former municipality was the village of Grov where Astafjord Church is located. The Astafjorden (strait) flowed along the northern part of the municipality and it was the namesake for the municipality.

The village is located next to the Rensåelva river which flows into the Astafjorden from the Rensåvatnet lake. The nearest larger village is Grov, about 11 km (6.8 mi) to the east.
