The administrative centre was the village of Selbekken. Other villages in the municipality included Ingdalen, Lensvik, Vassbygda, Vernes, and Leksa. The Brekstad–Valset Ferry connected Agdenes to the town of Brekstad in Ørland municipality on the other side of the Trondheimsfjorden.

Våvatnet is a lake in Orkland Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. The lake was dammed in 1910 and is used as the main reservoir for the municipality of Orkdal. The water flows into the lake Songsjøen and then into the lake Gagnåsvatnet.

Hemnfjorden is a fjord in Trøndelag county in Norway. The 25-kilometre (16 mi) long fjord forms the boundary between Heim Municipality, Hitra Municipality, and Orkland Municipality. The fjord begins at the village of Kyrksæterøra at the mouths of the rivers Søo and Haugaelva. The fjord flows northwards until it joins the Trondheimsleia. The Åstfjorden and Snillfjorden are smaller fjords which branch off the main Hemnfjorden to the east into Orkland Municipality. The deepest point in the fjord reaches 410 metres (1,350 ft) below sea level.

Krokstadøra is a village located in the western end of the municipality of Orkland in Trøndelag county, Norway. The population was in 2019 about 285 Krokstadøra is located close to the end of Snillfjorden, on the north side of the fjord, just west of the Bergselva river.

Snillfjorden is a fjord that branches off the main Hemnfjorden in Heim Municipality and Orkland Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. The 14-kilometre (8.7 mi) long fjord starts at the village of Krokstadøra where the rivers Snildalselva and Bergselva empty into the fjord. The mouth of the Snillfjorden is at the village of Ytre Snillfjord where it joins the larger Hemnfjorden. There are small settlements along the north and south shores of the fjord, but they do not all have road connections. There is a road that follows the southern coastline for about half of the fjord, but the rest of the coastline is without roads.

Snillfjord Church is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Orkland Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. It is located in the village of Krokstadøra. It is the church for the Snillfjord parish which is part of the Orkdal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nidaros. The white, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1899 by the architect Ole Falck Ebbell. The church seats about 250 people.

The municipality encompassed the northern part of what is now Heim Municipality and Orkland Municipality and the southeastern part of Hitra Municipality in Trøndelag county. The administrative centre was the village of Heim where Heim Church is located.
