Tillakaratne Mudiyanselage Dilshan is a former Sri Lankan cricketer and former captain of the Sri Lanka national cricket team. As the best rated Sri Lankan player in run-chases in ODI history, he is often regarded as one of the innovative and greatest ODI batsmen of all time. Dilshan is considered to be a rare example of a cricketer with notable skills in all aspects of the game, who can bat, bowl, field and keep wicket. He is an aggressive right-hand batsman who invented the scoop, which has come to be known as the Dilscoop, a shot that hits the ball over the keeper. Apart from being an opening batsman, he is also a capable off-break bowler. Energetic in the field, he usually plays at the point region.

After an inadequate preparation against weak teams, Pakistan lost by an innings in the first Test in Adelaide. While Australia won the series 3–0, the last two tests were competitive, with Pakistan seeming the likely winner on the second last days. The 2nd test in Melbourne was attended by 115,721. Pakistan also visited Sri Lanka and played a match against the Sri Lankan national cricket team and followed the tour with a series against New Zealand, where both teams played their first ODI.

Pakistan visited Sri Lanka en route for home and played a match against the Sri Lankan national cricket team.
Narangoda Liyanaarachchilage Thisara Chirantha Perera, popularly as Thisara Perera, is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer and a former limited overs captain for Sri Lanka, who currently represents Sri Lanka in limited over formats. Domestically he plays for Colts Cricket Club, Rising Pune Supergiants, Wayamba Wolves, and have recently joined Gloucestershire squad to play NatWest T20 Blast. Primarily a bowling all-rounder, he is an aggressive left-handed batsman who can hit big sixes in death overs and is a useful right-arm medium-fast bowler.
The Warne–Muralitharan Trophy is awarded to the winner of the Australia–Sri Lanka Test cricket series from 2007–08 season onwards. The trophy is named after the two leading wicket takers in Test cricket, Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan and Australia's Shane Warne. The trophy celebrates the 25th anniversary of Australia–Sri Lanka Test cricket. The trophy features casts of the two bowlers' right hands and match-used cricket balls bowled by them during their careers. Sri Lanka Cricket, the governing body of cricket in Sri Lanka had written to its Australian counterpart, Cricket Australia, that the winner of the series should be awarded a trophy named after the two bowlers. Cricket Australia had responded positively to the Sri Lankans' proposal. In unveiling the trophy, Cricket Australia said in a statement,
...The two greatest bowlers in world cricket history have lent their names to a perpetual prize that will be played for in the Test series between Australia and Sri Lanka.
Sport in Sri Lanka is a significant part of Sri Lankan culture. Although the Sports Ministry named volleyball the national sport, the most popular sport is cricket. Rugby union is also popular. Other popular sports are water sports, badminton, athletics, football, basketball and tennis. Sri Lanka's schools and colleges regularly organize sports and athletics teams, competing on provincial and national levels.

Deshabandu Pinnaduwage Aravinda de Silva is a former Sri Lankan cricketer and former captain. He has also played in English county cricket. Widely considered as one of the greatest batsmen ever produced by Sri Lanka, De Silva helped Sri Lanka to win the 1996 Cricket World Cup and brought Sri Lanka from underdog status to present day form. He has held various posts in Sri Lanka Cricket after his retirement in 2003.
Frank Dimuth Madushanka Karunaratne, popularly known as Dimuth Karunaratne, is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer and current captain of the Sri Lanka Test and One-Day International (ODI) cricket teams. He is a left-handed red ball specialist who represents the country in both Tests and ODIs, and plays first-class cricket for the Sinhalese Sports Club. Karunaratne is the opening batsman for Sri Lanka in Test cricket.

Cricket Australia confirmed the venues in August 2016, which included the first-ever international cricket match to be held at Kardinia Park, Geelong. With both Steve Smith and David Warner unavailable due to the scheduling of the series against India, Aaron Finch was named as Australia's captain for the series. Sri Lanka's T20I captain Angelo Mathews was unavailable for the tour, after suffering a hamstring injury during the second T20I against South Africa in January 2017.

The Sri Lanka cricket team toured Australia in January and February 2019 to play two Test matches for the Warne–Muralitharan Trophy. The first Test, in Brisbane, was a day/night match. They also played a three-day warm-up match ahead of the Test series. In April 2018, Cricket Australia confirmed that the Manuka Oval would host its first ever Test match. Australia won the series 2–0, with Tim Paine winning his first Test series as captain of Australia.
