Sri Lankan Hip Hop [1] is a part of the Asian hip hop culture. This multilingual genre features Sinhala, Tamil and English.
The first hip hop artists in Sri Lanka to gain popular recognition were Brown Boogie Nation (a G-funk-style group, composed of Subodha Pilimatalawwe, Nishan Dias Weerasinghe and Randhir Witana) and Rude Boy Republic (a Rude boy-style group, composed of Asif Ansar, Shiraz and Rukshan Dole) Backing beats and production by Mel "Herbie" Kent (Juliana's). Both of these groups featured in the 1997 compilation album, Colombo Tribe Project Vol. 1 (Blood Brother Records), which was the first time a recording of Sri Lankan hip hop had been released. [2] Brown Boogie Nation's song, "You Get Around" was the first original Sri Lankan hip hop song to receive radio airplay in the country (broadcast on local English radio station TNL Radio), and their politically-conscious anti-war song, "Lions and Tigers", was the first Sri Lankan hip hop music video aired on national television. The year 1998 saw the release of "'Gangsta Raps" and "Smooth Flow" by Urban Sound (composed of Krishan Maheson and his brother Gajan), which received airplay on local English radio station Sun FM. [4] Their next single, "Stop the Virus", won an award for the 'Best TV campaign on HIV Awareness' from the Asian Institute of Broadcasting Development. [5]
The beginning of Tamil rap by Krishan Maheson was 2004's "J Town Story", [6] [7] while the country's first Sinhala rap track was released in 2005 in the form of Iraj's eponymous album.[ citation needed ] Krishan Maheson's Asian Avenue was the first Sri Lankan album to be released by Universal Music India in 2006. [8] Sri Lankan-American DeLon's single “Nasty Girl” debuted at number 36 on the Billboard Charts.[ citation needed ] Ranidu Lankage's first single with Ashanthi, "Oba Magemai", led to the duo becoming the youngest Sri Lankan artists to be signed by an international record label, Sony Music India. [9] Lankage's “Kelle” was featured on the BBC Asian Chart and received worldwide airplay. [10]
Bathiya and Santhush and Randhir collaborated on the first hip hop remix song "Siri Sangabodhi".[ citation needed ] The DeLon remix of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" was another notable milestone. [11] [12] The selfie rap[ clarification needed ] phenomenon of 2015 is thought to have helped promote and popularise hip hop among a wider audience, after a lull spanning several years in the lead-up. Sri Lankan hip hop has grown from a niche status to a mainstay in the local music industry in less than two decades, with a few of them even going international. [14] [15]
The Gypsies are a Sri Lankan baila band that performs Sinhala and English songs. The band was founded in the early 1970s and has since garnered a huge fan base across Sri Lanka and is one of Sri Lanka's most famous bands. They are a highly paid band in Sri Lanka, as they constantly perform at parties, dances and at many concerts.
Bathiya & Santhush, also known as BNS, are a Sri Lankan pop duo consisting of Bathiya Jayakody and Santhush Weeraman, who met while at the "Mary Anne David School of Vocal Music" in Colombo. They both were born in Colombo, Sri Lanka. They have been one of the most commercially successful music acts in Sri Lanka in the last two decades.
Nalanda College is a leading Buddhist school in Sri Lanka where provides primary and secondary education for Sri Lankan boys. The school was established by P. de S. Kularatne as an offshoot of Ananda College Colombo and was registered as a separate school on 1 November 1924.
Deshabandu Gammana Patabendige Don John Abeywickrama, popularly as Joe Abeywickrama, was an actor in Sri Lankan cinema, theater and television. Initially famed as a comedic actor in early 1950s, Abeywickrama became one of the greatest film actors of alltime in Sinhala cinema with several critically acclaimed award winning dramatic performances.
TV Derana is a Sri Lankan private entertainment terrestrial television channel broadcasting in Sri Lanka. Launched on 11 October 2005, it is one of the most popular television networks in the country. Its main transmission tower is on the Kikilimana mountain, and coverage is extended nationwide via eight transmission towers.
Ranidu Lankage is a Sinhalese R&B and hip hop artist who raised the international profile of Sinhalese RnB/pop. Lankage is the first Sinhalese artist to be played on BBC Radio 1 and the creator of the first Sinhalese single to be played on MTV and channel V and Z music India. He is a graduate in Economics from Yale University.
Iraj Weeraratne is a Sinhalese R&B and hip hop artist, music producer,DJ and entrepreneur. Weeraratne had a television show on Derana TV called "Iraj Show". He is known as a prominent hip-hop and RnB artist in Sri Lanka. He was the first person to introduce Sinhala rap as well as Tamil rap to Sri Lanka in 2004.
Randhir Yasendra Witana, known simply as Randhir, is a Sri Lankan rapper and songwriter.
The Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka (SOSL) is based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and is one of the oldest orchestras in South Asia.
Fr. Marcelline Jayakody was a Sri Lankan Catholic priest, musician, lyricist, author, journalist and an exponent of indigenous culture. He is attributed with the epithet 'පන්සලේ පියතුමා'. Ven. Dr. Ittapane Dhammalankara Thera authored a book on Jayakody's life, මල් පැලේ උපන් පන්සලේ පියතුමා,, which is recorded as the first book in the world by a Buddhist prelate on a Catholic priest.
Krishan Maheson, known as Krishan, is a rap artist from Sri Lanka. Krishan specialises in rap music, and is one of the pioneer Tamil rap artists in the world. Krishan helped start the Tamil rap scene in Sri Lanka, together with his brother, Gajan, and fellow MC Yauwanan. Krishan migrated to Darwin, Australia in 2018 which makes another legendary Sri Lankan Tamil artist leaving the country.
Heendeniya Vidanaralalage Punya Heendeniya, popularly as Punya Heendeniya, is a former Sri Lankan cinema actress who resides in England.
Aaryan Dinesh Kanagaratnam, also known by his initials A. D. K. or simply Dinesh Kanagaratnam, is a Sri Lankan R&B and hip hop artist and music producer who has composed tracks in Tamil language. He also often collaborates with music directors in Tamil cinema as a playback singer.
Gayesha Perera is a Sri Lankan actress, tv host, model and beauty pageant titleholder. She was crowned Miss Sri Lanka for Miss International 2006 beauty pageant.

One of the best dramatic actors in Sinhala drama, Ravindra is a recipient of Best Actor Award in many local award festivals in multiple times.
Srimani Anoma Athulathmudali MP was a Sri Lankan politician and a former government minister who held the position of minister of Environment, Transport and Women's Affairs under the Wijetunga cabinet appointed by the former Sri Lankan president, D.B. Wijetunga. She died of cancer in 2004.
Bahuchithawadiya (The Undecided) (Sinhala: බහුචිතවාදියා) is an upcoming Sri Lankan Sinhala drama romance film directed and produced by Malaka Dewapriya. It stars Kalana Gunasekara and Veena Jayakody in lead roles along with Lakshman Mendis, Samanalee Fonseka and Damitha Abeyratne. Music composed by Chitral Somapala.

The H.A.I. Goonetileke Prize for Literary Translation is a bi-annual literary prize in Sri Lanka. It is awarded by the Gratiaen Trust, which also awards the Gratiaen Prize, for the translation of Sinhala or Tamil language creative writing into English. It was established in 2003.
