Sri Lankan hip-hop

Sri Lankan Hip Hop [1] is a part of the Asian hip hop culture. This multilingual genre features Sinhala, Tamil and English.

History

The first hip hop artists in Sri Lanka to gain popular recognition were Brown Boogie Nation (a G-funk-style group, composed of Subodha Pilimatalawwe, Nishan Dias Weerasinghe and Randhir Witana) and Rude Boy Republic (a Rude boy-style group, composed of Asif Ansar, Shiraz and Rukshan Dole) Backing beats and production by Mel "Herbie" Kent (Juliana's). Both of these groups featured in the 1997 compilation album, Colombo Tribe Project Vol. 1 (Blood Brother Records), which was the first time a recording of Sri Lankan hip hop had been released. [2] Brown Boogie Nation's song, "You Get Around" was the first original Sri Lankan hip hop song to receive radio airplay in the country (broadcast on local English radio station TNL Radio), and their politically-conscious anti-war song, "Lions and Tigers", was the first Sri Lankan hip hop music video aired on national television. [3]

The year 1998 saw the release of "'Gangsta Raps" and "Smooth Flow" by Urban Sound (composed of Krishan Maheson and his brother Gajan), which received airplay on local English radio station Sun FM. [4] Their next single, "Stop the Virus", won an award for the 'Best TV campaign on HIV Awareness' from the Asian Institute of Broadcasting Development. [5]

The beginning of Tamil rap by Krishan Maheson was 2004's "J Town Story", [6] [7] while the country's first Sinhala rap track was released in 2005 in the form of Iraj's eponymous album.[ citation needed ] Krishan Maheson's Asian Avenue was the first Sri Lankan album to be released by Universal Music India in 2006. [8] Sri Lankan-American DeLon's single “Nasty Girl” debuted at number 36 on the Billboard Charts.[ citation needed ] Ranidu Lankage's first single with Ashanthi, "Oba Magemai", led to the duo becoming the youngest Sri Lankan artists to be signed by an international record label, Sony Music India. [9] Lankage's “Kelle” was featured on the BBC Asian Chart and received worldwide airplay. [10]

Bathiya and Santhush and Randhir collaborated on the first hip hop remix song "Siri Sangabodhi".[ citation needed ] The DeLon remix of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" was another notable milestone. [11] [12] The selfie rap[ clarification needed ] phenomenon of 2015 is thought to have helped promote and popularise hip hop among a wider audience, after a lull spanning several years in the lead-up. [13]

Pcx1 Present , born Prabuddha Dissanayake, has made a name for himself as the fastest young rapper in Sri Lanka (2024). His impressive ability to deliver rap verses at incredible speeds, such as performing Charitha Attalage's "Galana Gaga" [14] at 3.0 times the original speed, has earned him comparisons to global rap icons like Eminem. Record-breaking feat of articulating 80 words in just 18 seconds showcase his exceptional technical skills and rigorous practice. [15]

Sri Lankan hip hop has grown from a niche status to a mainstay in the local music industry in less than two decades, with a few of them even going international. [16] [17]

Panadura is famed as the location of important events in the Buddhist revival movement of Sri Lanka. Panadura Beach is an attractive place for local and foreign tourists.

Ranidu Lankage is a Sinhalese R&B and hip hop artist who raised the international profile of Sinhalese RnB/pop. Lankage is the first Sinhalese artist to be played on BBC Radio 1 and the creator of the first Sinhalese single to be played on MTV and channel V and Z music India. He is a graduate in Economics from Yale University.

Iraj Weeraratne known by the stage-name IRAJ, is a Sri Lankan rapper, music producer and DJ. Weeraratne had a television show on Derana TV called Iraj Show. He was the first person to introduce Sinhala rap as well as Tamil rap to Sri Lanka in 2004.

Randhir Yasendra Witana, known simply as Randhir, is a Sri Lankan rapper and songwriter.

Dr. Ittapane Dhammalankara Thera authored a book on Jayakody's life, මල් පැලේ උපන් පන්සලේ පියතුමා,, which is recorded as the first book in the world by a Buddhist prelate on a Catholic priest.

Vishvanath Buddhika Keerthisena, also known as Boodee Keerthisena, is a Sri Lankan filmmaker. He began his career drawing comics before moving into painting, dress design, and visual arts. He moved into music in the late 1980s, and performed in a band called "Boo-Dee and the Woo-Zees" (1986–1992) as the lead singer.

Krishan Maheson, known as Krishan, is a rap artist from Sri Lanka. Krishan specialises in rap music, and is one of the pioneering Tamil rap artists in the world. Maheson helped start the Tamil rap scene in Sri Lanka, together with his brother, Gajan, and fellow MC Yauwanan. Maheson migrated to Darwin, Australia in 2018.

She is also a published poet with the National Library of North American poets.

Duggannaralalage Wasantha Kumara Bandara, popularly as Dukaa, is an actor in Sri Lankan cinema and stage drama as well as a lyricist, television host, author and media personality.

Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka, also abbreviated as IBSL, is a professional apex body of banking education in Sri Lanka. It is one of the prominent institutes which carry out banking courses for the students and it is closely associated with Central Bank of Sri Lanka. The institute was formally established as the Bankers' Training Institute in 1964 by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. Bankers' Training Institute was reincorporated in 1979 as Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka under the provisions of Parliament Act no 26 of 1979.

The H.A.I. Goonetileke Prize for Literary Translation is a bi-annual literary prize in Sri Lanka. It is awarded by the Gratiaen Trust, which also awards the Gratiaen Prize, for the translation of Sinhala or Tamil language creative writing into English. It was established in 2003.
