St. Mary's Seminary/Senior High School (SMASCO), formerly St. Mary's Seminary Secondary School, is a boys-only second cycle institution in Lolobi, in the Oti Region of Ghana. [1] [2]
SMASCO was founded as a minor seminary at Lolobi on 29 September 1961 by the Roman Catholic Church under the leadership of Reverend Anthony Konings, a Dutch missionary who was the bishop of Keta-Akatsi Diocese. [3] The institution was intended to serve both as the minor seminary for the entire Keta Diocese and as a secondary school for the area. From its founding date, SMASCO opened admission to non-seminarians and students of all denominations.
The first headmaster of the institution was Fr. William Van Frankenhuijesen, SMA. From 1970 to 1972, Fr. Francis Lodonu who was then ordained to the priesthood at Gbi Atabu on 18 May 1964 by Bishop Anthony Konings, was appointed as the vice rector and later the rector of St. Mary's Minor Seminary. Between 1972 and 1973, he became both the rector and the headmaster of St. Mary's Seminary Secondary School. While in St. Mary's, Fr. Lodonu also taught Latin in Form I, Ewe Language, Bible Knowledge and Geography in Form IV and V. On 29 June 1973, Lodonu was ordained a bishop in Rome at St. Peters Basilica by Pope Paul VI. [4] Other headmasters of the school include Rev. Fr. Ephraim Mensah, Rev. Fr. Anthony Hwanompe, Rev. Fr. Edward Siffah, [5] and Rev. Fr. Pascal Afesi. [6] As of June 2020, the school was under the administration of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ho. In 1977, the school became a government-assisted school, similar to most other Catholic schools in the region.
SMASCO is headed by Catholic Priests and many of its teachers are also Catholic Priests. Rev. Fr. Felix Akpah is the headmaster as of June 2020. [7] As of June 2020, the Rector of St. Mary's Minor Seminary is Very Rev. Fr. Paul Afetor while the Chaplain for both the seminary and the senior high school is Rev. Fr. John Winfred Bosso.
The student population of the school ranges between 1,500 and 1,700 each year with about 96% of the students being in the boarding house. The students are called SMASCANS and the alumni are known as CARDINALS. The school anthem and motto is "Domine Adsum", translated into English as "Lord here I am". [8] The alumni organisation is known as St. Mary's Old Boys Association (SMOBA). The mass choir in the school is called St. Mary's Seminary Choir. This choir leads the day-to-day Mass in the campus chapel and also performs at Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto at Kpando-Agbonoxoe in the Volta Region during pilgrimages. Extracurricular activities on campus include soccer, volleyball, basketball, athletics, handball and table tennis. A rivalry exists between SMASCO and other schools such as Hohoe EP Senior High School, Bishop Herman College, Mawuli School, and OLA Girls Senior High School academically and otherwise. [9]
St. Mary's Seminary/Secondary School has been known in the Volta and Oti Regions of Ghana, and is consistently ranked high in both the Volta and the Oti Regions. In recent past, SMASCO used to be among the top-five schools in the Volta Region and ranked highly on the national ranking. However, lack of facilities as a result of the Catholic Church looking at the government to take the primary responsibility of the school, academic performance has gone down considerably. [10] [11] [8] That not withstanding, in October 2015, at the 1st. National Best School Award Ceremony, the school received a certificate signed by the then Minister of Education, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang in recognition of the school as the Best Performing senior high school in Science from the Volta Region for the year 2015. The school participates in the National Science and Maths Quiz and inter-school Debate Competitions annually. [12] [13] [14] [15]
There are four houses on campus; all of which are named after Catholic Saints. Every student in SMASCO belongs to a house. Each house is made up of various dormitories.
Hohoe Municipal is one of the 25 administrative districts of the Volta Region of Ghana. It was carved out of the former Kpando District. It was established by the Legislative Instrument of 2012. The Municipality has a total land area of 1,172 km2, which is 5.6 per cent of the land area of the region. It shares borders with the Republic of Togo on the east, forming part of Ghana's international border; on the southeast by the Afadzato district and southwest by Kpando Municipality; on the north with Jasikan district; and on the northwest with the Biakoye districts. Its capital, Hohoe, is about 78 km from Ho, the regional capital and 220 km from Accra, the national capital. The population of Hohoe Municipality, according to the 2010 Population and Housing Census, is 167,016 representing 7.9 per cent of the total population of the Volta Region. It comprises 52.1 per cent females and 47.9 percent males.
Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School (PRESEC) is a secondary boarding school for boys, it is located in Legon, Accra, Ghana. It was founded in 1938, under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church of the Gold Coast. The Basel missionary-theologian, Nicholas Timothy Clerk (1862–1961), who served as the first Synod Clerk of the Presbyterian Church of the Gold Coast from 1918 to 1932, used his tenure to advocate for the establishment of the secondary school. The school has ties with its sister schools, Aburi Girls' Senior High School and Krobo Girls Senior High School.
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Accra covers the Greater Accra Region and parts of the Volta Region. There are 62 parishes and rectories. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Accra is the Metropolitan See for the ecclesiastical province of Accra in Ghana which includes the suffragan dioceses of Ho, Koforidua, Jasikan and Keta-Akatsi. The Latin title of the archdiocese is Archidioecesis Accraënsis, and the corporate title is Archdiocese of Accra. The cathedral parish for the archdiocese is the Holy Spirit Cathedral.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Keta–Akatsi is a suffragan Latin diocese in the Ecclesiastical province of Accra in Ghana, yet still depends on the missionary Roman Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

Francis Anani Kofi Lodonu is a Ghanaian Roman Catholic Bishop. He was the bishop of Roman Catholic Diocese of Ho until his retirement in 2015.
The Seminary of St. Pius X, or St. Pius X Seminary (SPXS), is a Filipino Roman Catholic secondary school and seminary in the Lawaan hills, Roxas City, Capiz, in the Philippines, run by the Catholic priests of the Archdiocese of Capiz. The seminary and its surrounding areas comprise some three hectares of rocky hills. Cardinal Jaime Sin was the first rector of the school. In 1999, the college of St. Pius X Seminary transferred to Cagay, Roxas City, Capiz, and named the school Sancta Maria, Mater et Regina, Seminarium (SMMRS) to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. SPXS decided to retain and maintain its high school and pre-college until 2012, pre-college was transferred to SMMRS.
The Archbishop Porter Girls' Senior High School is a Catholic senior secondary school for girls, located in Takoradi in the Western Region of Ghana. The female second cycle institution operates within the Ghana Public Education System. It was founded in 1965 by Rev. Kodjo Amissah with the name St. Louis Secondary School, which was later changed to Archbishop Porter Girls. It welcomes girls of all religious denominations. The school is situated on a hill in Fijai, Takoradi and it has come to be known as the "Hill of Tranquility" for its peaceful and serene academic atmosphere.
Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary, is an all-boys boarding school, located at Effiduase, Koforidua, in the Eastern Region of Ghana. It was established in 1958 by Bishop Joseph Oliver Bowers SVD as a Catholic seminary for boys who wished to become priests. Students are offered courses such as general arts, general science, business and visual arts to pursue and after their stay in the school, sit an external examination called the West African Senior School Certificate Examination to be placed in any of the tertiary institutions in the country.
