The MV Steve Irwin was the 59-metre (194 ft) flagship of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, and was used in their direct action campaigns against whaling and against illegal fisheries activities. The vessel was built in 1975 and formerly served as a Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency conservation enforcement patrol boat, the FPV Westra, for 28 years.

On 4 September 2006, Australian zookeeper, conservationist, and television programmer Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray while filming in the Great Barrier Reef. The stingray's barb pierced his chest, penetrating his thoracic wall and heart, causing massive trauma. He was at Batt Reef, near Port Douglas, Queensland, taking part in the production of an underwater documentary Ocean's Deadliest. During a lull in filming caused by inclement weather, Irwin decided to snorkel in shallow waters while being filmed in an effort to provide footage for his daughter Bindi's television program.

Wildlife Warriors is a compilation album by Australian country music artist John Williamson. The album was released in November 2006 following the death of Steve Irwin and contains important environmental songs; many of which inspirations to Irwin. A$1 from each sale was donated to the Wildlife Warriors conservation foundation, a charity founded by Steve and Terri Irwin. Williamson said "[Steve] was a loud, proud Aussie who promoted the wonders of our ancient land with incredible enthusiasm. So if my new CD helps raise more awareness for the Wildlife Warriors' cause, that's great!" The album includes two live recording from Irwin's memorial. The album, peaked at number 78 on the ARIA Charts. The album was supported with a "Wildlife Warrior Tour" across Australia in 2007.
