Still Flyin' is an American Indie pop band based in San Francisco, founded in 2004 by Sean Rawls.

Name of the Band

The band is based on the song "Never Gonna Touch the Ground", a song that Rawls wrote and performed in a prior band, Je Suis France. [1] After moving to San Francisco, Rawls recorded the song, which took on a life of its own resulting in the creation of Still Flyin'. The chorus of the song, "Still Flyin', never gonna touch the ground" was the source of the band's name as well as its debut album and title track.

Formation and History

In 2004, Sean Rawls, a veteran of bands Masters of the Hemisphere and Je Suis France moved from Athens, GA to San Francisco, CA. Upon arriving in San Francisco Rawls asked just about everybody he knew [2] to join his new project. Most of the friends he had in San Francisco were fellow musicians he had met through his prior bands, and many of them joined Rawls to form Still Flyin'.

The band played its first live show at the Hemlock Tavern in San Francisco in November, 2004. [2] Shortly thereafter they embarked on a tour of the US West Coast opening for Architecture in Helsinki. [3] In August, 2006 they went on their first tour of Scandinavia, playing at the Emmaboda Festival [4] in Sweden. During this tour they were joined onstage by Jens Lekman. [5] Still Flyin' returned to Scandinavia in 2007. In 2008 they performed in Australia's St Jerome's Laneway Festival, where they met Spiral Stairs. He curated [6] the 2008 Sled Island Festival [7] in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and invited Still Flyin'. In early 2009 Still Flyin' toured Europe and returned to Australia to play St. Jerome's Laneway Festival once again. They played at the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival [5] in Austin, Texas in early spring and summer saw them touring Europe once again, where they performed at the Secret Garden Party [8] festival in the UK.

Still Flyin' signed with Antenna Farm in 2006 and released 2 EP's. In 2008, the band signed with Ernest Jenning (US), London-based Moshi Moshi and Australian label Lost and Lonesome for the release of their first full-length record.

Musical style

Still Flyin's sound is generally classified as reggae [9] or rocksteady. [10] However, the band has coined its own term to classify its sound and outlook: hammjamm, [3] [11] [12] [13] which is loosely defined as "when a good time gets better" [14] and with lifestyle ramifications involving "friends, beers, high fives, parties and enjoying life to the fullest". [12]

Members

Although the band started and is based in San Francisco, its members now stretch to all corners of the world. [15] The band is made up of a "core" lineup with a long roster of "spiritual members", who join the band for live performances when geography permits.

Influences

Rawls's songwriting is influenced by a lot of popular music. Of note are the songs mentioned in the lyrics to H-O-T-T-C-H-O-R-D: Electric Avenue, Funkytown, All Night Long, Walk of Life, Turn to Stone and What a Fool Believes. [16] In addition, Rawls is a fan of the music of Talking Heads, Konono N°1, Kraftwerk, Christopher Cross and many others.

When asked in interviews about influences, Rawls has consistently mentioned Matthew McConaughey, [17] [18] [19] whom the band regards as a lifestyle role model.

Masters of the Hemisphere are an American indie pop group, founded by Bren Mead and Sean Rawls. The two moved to Athens, Georgia, to attend college in 1996. There they met Ryan Lewis, co-founder of Kindercore Records, who played drums at the first Masters of the Hemisphere show. Jeff Griggs soon replaced Lewis. In 1997 Kindercore released their debut seven-inch ep, Going on a Trek to Iceland. The group then recorded their first full-length album, the eponymous Masters of the Hemisphere, which was released on Kindercore Records in 1998. The band soon expanded to a four-piece, adding multi-instrumentalist Adrian Finch. Several singles and compilation appearances followed, including a release on the Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records singles club, before the band released their second full length, the concept album I Am Not a Freemdoom, also on Kindercore. The record garnered mixed reviews, which in part was likely due to the album's rather complicated concept, regarding an island of reservoir-dwelling creatures being enslaved by an evil dog. The Permanent Stranger EP followed in 2002, on the dcBaltimore2012 label. The band split up after their next album, 2002's well received Protest a Dark Anniversary. A recording of their then-final show at Athens, Georgia's 40 Watt Club was later released as The Last Show Ever.

The label has released music by bands including Lykke Li, Fimber Bravo, Bloc Party, Hot Chip, Late of the Pier, Hot Club De Paris, Kate Nash, Florence and the Machine, Architecture in Helsinki, the Wave Pictures, Disclosure, Sweet Baboo, Tilly and the Wall, Blue Foundation, Slow Club, Happyness, and Au Revoir Simone. Mates Of State's 2008 record Re-Arrange Us was Moshi Moshi's 50th release. Adrian Pike left the set up within a couple of years leaving McClatchey and Bass to carry on the business. These days it also includes a Management Company who manage Metronomy, Teleman, Slow Club and Sweet Baboo among others and has publishing interests in conjunction with Tummy Touch Music, Eagle-I Music and Blue Mountain Music.

Carlos Alberto Mestre mostly known by his stage name Nito Mestre, is an Argentine musician, founding member –along with Charly García– of Sui Generis, member of PorSuiGieco, bandleader of Nito Mestre y los Desconocidos de Siempre and a recording solo artist. Sui Generis, was initially formed in 1969 by Charly García, Nito Mestre, Rolando Fortich (bass guitar Liam Young, Alberto Rodriguez and Carlos Piegari. Later on, Sui Generis became a duo as everyone left except for García. After the band split in 1975, Nito Mestre formed a new band called "Nito Mestre y los Desconocidos de Siempre" with María Rosa Yorio on vocals, Rodolfo Gorosito on guitar, Alfredo Toth on bass, Ciro Fogliatta on keyboards and Juan Carlos "Mono" Fontana as a drummer. In the early 80s, Nito pursued a solo career.

Je Suis France is an American indie rock group formed in Athens, GA, in 1997. Their albums have been released by David Lowery's Pitch-A-Tent Records, Elf Power's Orange Twin Records, and Antenna Farm Records. The band has also self-released a number of singles and CD-Rs.
