Phillips Academy is a co-educational university-preparatory school for boarding and day students in grades 9–12, along with a post-graduate year. The school is in Andover, Massachusetts, United States, 25 miles north of Boston. Phillips Academy has 1,131 students, and is highly selective, accepting just 9% for the 2022–2023 school year. It is part of the Eight Schools Association and the Ten Schools Admissions Organization, as well as the G30 Schools Group.

Discipline commonly refers to rule-following behaviour, regulation, order, control and authority. It may also refer to the science of operant conditioning that studies how ideas and behavior are guided and managed with consequences that increase behavior (reinforcements) or decrease behavior (punishment). Discipline is used by all those in authority to encourage routines, and automatic mechanisms such as habits, athletic performance, success, insight, and obedience. Self-discipline involves self-restraint, and deferred gratification that delays emotional impulses by calculated choice. All associations have disciplinarians that enforce, modify, and enact rules. The role and functions of the disciplinarian may be informal and even unconscious in every day social settings. Historical examples may be easier to spot. Sailing ships , slave plantations and the regimentation of the Industrial Revolution's factory system provide obvious historical examples of task driven discipline with heavy reliance on punishment. Education, business, therapy, insurance, and most areas of modern society are shifting away from punishment (harm) in favor of managed discipline.

Once confined to medical graduates, internship is used practice for a wide range of placements in businesses, non-profit organizations and government agencies. They are typically undertaken by students and graduates looking to gain relevant skills and experience in a particular field. Employers benefit from these placements because they often recruit employees from their best interns, who have known capabilities, thus saving time and money in the long run. Internships are usually arranged by third-party organizations that recruit interns on behalf of industry groups. Rules vary from country to country about when interns should be regarded as employees. The system can be open to exploitation by unscrupulous employers.

Amanda Michelle Todd was a 15-year-old Canadian student and victim of cyberbullying who hanged herself at her home in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. A month before her death, Todd posted a video on YouTube in which she used a series of flashcards to tell her experience of being blackmailed into exposing her breasts via webcam, and of being bullied and physically assaulted. The video went viral after her death, resulting in international media attention. The original video has had more than 15 million views as of May 2023, although mirrored copies of the video had received tens of millions of additional views shortly after her death; additionally, a YouTube video by React has a video of teens reacting to Todd’s video which has garnered 44.7 million views as of May 2023, and various videos from news agencies around the world regarding the case have registered countless millions more. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and British Columbia Coroners Service launched investigations into the suicide.
Google Code-in (GCI) was an international annual programming competition hosted by Google LLC that allowed pre-university students to complete tasks specified by various, partnering open source organizations. The contest was originally the Google Highly Open Participation Contest, but in 2010, the format was modified into its current state. Students that completed tasks won certificates and T-shirts. Each organization also selected two grand prize award winners who would earn a free trip to Google's Headquarters located in Mountain View, California. In 2020, Google announced cancellation of the contest.

On February 14, 2018, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz opened fire on students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the Miami suburban town of Parkland, Florida, United States, murdering 17 people and injuring 17 others. Cruz, a former student at the school, fled the scene on foot by blending in with other students and was arrested without incident approximately one hour later in nearby Coral Springs. Police and prosecutors investigated "a pattern of disciplinary issues and unnerving behavior".
