From 20 to 23 September 1993 during the Sukhumi massacre as part of the war in Abkhazia, separatists in Sukhumi, Abkhazia blocked the Georgian troop's overland supply routes.
Aleksandr Zolotinskovich Ankvab is an Abkhaz politician and businessman who was President of Abkhazia from 29 May 2011, until his resignation on 1 June 2014. Under President Sergei Bagapsh, he previously served as Prime Minister from 2005 to 2010 and Vice-President from 2010 to 2011. He was appointed Prime Minister again on 23 April 2020.

Sukhumi Babushara Airport, previously known as Sukhumi Dranda Airport, and also known as Vladislav Ardzinba Sokhumi International Airport, is the main airport of Abkhazia. Tourism in Abkhazia is illegal under Georgian law through an action of the Georgian government to ban foreigners from entering the occupied territory without permission, as Georgia cannot assure the safety inside disputed territory. However, the Abkazian beaches on the Black Sea continue to be accessible for tourists coming from the Russian side of the Abkhazia–Russia border which is not under Georgian control. Low prices and an absence of any visa requirements attracts Russian tourists especially those who can not afford the vacations in Turkey, Egypt, Bulgaria and other popular Russian touristic directions.
The 2016 ConIFA World Football Cup was the second edition of the ConIFA World Football Cup, an international football tournament for states, minorities, stateless peoples and regions unaffiliated with FIFA organised by ConIFA. The tournament was hosted by the Football Federation of Abkhazia, with the Abkhazia team becoming the first host nation to win the tournament.
Aeroflot Flight 207 was a Soviet domestic passenger flight from Rostov-on-Don Airport to Tbilisi International Airport that crashed on 10 June 1960 in the Tkvarcheli district. The crash involved an Ilyushin Il-14 aircraft operated by Aeroflot. All 24 passengers and 7 crew on board were killed.
The 407th Rifle Division was an infantry division of the Red Army that was briefly active shortly after the end of World War II, from August 1945 to early 1946. The division, the first Red Army rifle division created after the end of the war in Europe, was formed from the second formation of the 94th Separate Rifle Brigade, which had been formed in early 1943 for garrison duty at the port city of Sukhumi in Georgia.
