On September 30, 2025, Sycamore High School became the first school in the county to install OpenGate weapon detection scanners. The devices were introduced as part of a district-wide security initiative following the Antioch High School shooting in Nashville earlier in the year.
The rollout, overseen by Cheatham County School Resource Officers, was scheduled to continue through Fall Break across other middle and high schools in the district. According to district officials, the project cost approximately $220,000 and was modeled after similar systems used in Metro Nashville Public Schools. [7]
Sycamore High School (SHS) was established in the 1995–96 school year as part of a district-wide reorganization to accommodate growing student enrollment in northern Cheatham County. Prior to this, students in grades 7 through 9 attended Sycamore Middle School (SMS), which had originally opened in 1979 as a junior high. In 1987–88, SMS was converted into a traditional middle school serving grades 6–8.
With the opening of Sycamore High School, 7th and 8th grade students were temporarily relocated there, while SMS was restructured as Sycamore Intermediate School to serve only 5th and 6th graders. Over the following years, school clusters were formed to better distribute the student population. As part of this restructuring, SMS gradually added grades back, bringing 7th grade in 1998–99 and 8th grade in 2000–01 back after facility expansions. Meanwhile, SHS transitioned into a full four-year high school, housing grades 9 through 12 by the 2000–01 school year.
Today, Sycamore High School serves students in grades 9–12 and is fed primarily by Sycamore Middle School, which now enrolls students in grades 5–8. [8]
Sycamore High School is recognized for its comprehensive athletics program and active participation in interscholastic sports. As a member of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA), [9] the school competes in a variety of sports, including basketball, football, baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, wrestling, cross country, and track and field.
