Grete Wiesenthal was an Austrian dancer, actor, choreographer, and dance teacher. She transformed the Viennese Waltz from a staple of the ballroom into a wildly ecstatic dance. Karlheinz Oswald is a German sculptor known for his portraits and cast iron sculptures, many of dancers, often displayed in public places. He studied at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz from 1981, and between 1983 and 1988 worked in Thomas Duttenhoefer's studio in Wiesbaden. Oswald began to produce his first sculptures of dancers in 1988, and the following year his first stained glass windows were displayed at the International Sculpture Symposium in Dreieich. He has operated his own workshop from 1989. In 1991 he won the Sports Toto prize including a trip to New York where he studied movements of dancers at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. He collaborated from 1996 with dancers of the Deutsche Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, who inspired his sculptures.

She managed the program for Berlin as the European City of Culture that year. Hertling is considered the grande dame of the established German Freies Theater.
Tanz im August is an annual festival for contemporary dance in Berlin. It was founded by Nele Hertling in West Berlin in 1988, and is now presented by the Hebbel am Ufer (HAU) theatre company on various stages in Berlin. It presents companies from all over the world with their new choreography, aesthetics and formats, new projects by Berlin artists, collaboration with international guests, and co-production for world premieres and German premieres. Virve Sutinen has been artistic director from 2014.
