Terry Kee Buck Hwa is the current Bishop of the Lutheran Church in Singapore and a Vice-President of the National Council of Churches of Singapore. [1] He also served as president of the National Council of Churches of Singapore from 2012 to 2014. [2]

A bishop is an ordained, consecrated, or appointed member of the Christian clergy who is generally entrusted with a position of authority and oversight.

Lutheran Church in Singapore

The Lutheran Church in Singapore (LCS) is a Lutheran denomination in Singapore. Constituted in 1997, it currently has approximately 2,834 members in 7 congregations nationwide.

The National Council of Churches of Singapore (NCCS) is an ecumenical fellowship of Churches and Christian organisations in Singapore. This duty was initially carried out by the Malayan Christian Council which was then succeeded by the Council of Churches of Malaysia and Singapore. Following the expulsion of Singapore from Malaysia, a new, separate Council of Churches in Singapore was then constituted on 24 July 1974. It represents over 250 churches in Singapore.

Education

Kee studied in Singapore Bible College for his Bachelor of Theology degree. He obtained his Masters in Pastoral Care and Counselling in 2007 at China Lutheran Seminary in Taiwan.

Singapore Bible College

Singapore Bible College (SBC) is an evangelical Bible college in Singapore. SBC has over 500 students, representing 25 countries. The current principal is Rev Dr Clement Chia.

The Bachelor of Theology degree is a three- to five-year undergraduate degree in theological disciplines. Candidates for this degree typically must complete course work in Greek or Hebrew, as well as systematic theology, biblical theology, ethics, homiletics, hermeneutics and Christian ministry. It does not require a thesis but is often a year longer than a Bachelor of Religious Education or Bachelor of Arts. In some denominations, notably the Church of England, it is considered sufficient for formal ordination.

Service in the Lutheran Church

Kee was pastor of Bedok Lutheran Church, Jurong Christian Church, Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer and Queenstown Lutheran Church. He also served as a missionary to Thailand.

Involvement in Inter-faith Efforts

Kee has been involved in Interfaith dialogue in Singapore, as a representative of Christianity the Inter-Religious Organisation in Singapore. [3] Kee has visited different religious organisations as a representative of the Christian faith. [4] In 2017, when a Muslim imam made inappropriate remarks against Christians and Jews, Kee was among the 30 religious representatives present when the imam made his apology. [5]

Interfaith dialogue Positive interaction of different religious people

Interfaith dialogue refers to cooperative, constructive, and positive interaction between people of different religious traditions and/or spiritual or humanistic beliefs, at both the individual and institutional levels. It is distinct from syncretism or alternative religion, in that dialogue often involves promoting understanding between different religions or beliefs to increase acceptance of others, rather than to synthesize new beliefs.

Jurong Church Hub

The building of Jurong Christian Church was a two-storey brick building since 1967. In 2007, the church was given notices by government authorities to reinforce some of its columns and beams to continue its operations. Kee decided to rebuild the church building to test his church hub concept that he had been discussing with the local authorities to mitigate the scarcity of land available for religious use in Singapore. [6]

In January 2014, Kee, in his capacity as the Bishop of the Lutheran Church, led a project to build a church building that housed 6 churches from different denominations. [7]

Bishop Angaelos was consecrated in 1999 as a General Bishop in the United Kingdom of the Coptic Orthodox Church, the church of Egypt founded, according to its tradition, by Mark the Apostle around 55 AD and the largest Christian denomination in the Middle East. He was born in Cairo, Egypt and emigrated with his family to Australia; he spent his childhood and early life there, obtained his Bachelor of Arts, majoring in political science, philosophy and sociology, and went on to postgraduate studies in law whilst working in the same field. Lutheran Church in Malaysia

The Lutheran Church in Malaysia or LCM is one of four Lutheran bodies in Malaysia. It currently has 52 congregations nationwide with a total of 8,453 baptised members and is the largest entirely Lutheran body in the country.
