Thanatos (US band)

Last updated

Thanatos is a dark wave band whose recordings were released by or are distributed by Projekt Records. The band's origins trace to the mid 1980s and was a studio project of Patrick Ogle (aka Padraic Ogl) and Sam Rosenthal (black tape for a blue girl).

Dark wave is a music genre that emerged from the new wave and post-punk movement of the late 1970s. Dark wave compositions are largely based on minor key tonality and introspective lyrics, and have been perceived as being dark, romantic, and bleak, with an undertone of sorrow. Common features include the use of chordophones such as electric and acoustic guitar, violin, and piano, as well as electronic instruments such as synthesizer, sampler, and drum machine. The genre embraces a range of styles including cold wave, ethereal wave, gothic rock, neoclassical dark wave, and neofolk.

Projekt is a Portland, Oregon-based independent record label that specializes in darkwave, ambient, and shoegaze, started by Sam Rosenthal in 1983. Projekt is also known for releases in the gothic rock, ethereal, dream-pop, and dark cabaret genres.

He lives in Portland, Oregon with his son and cat. Rosenthal was interviewed in August 2016 for an NPR piece about the DMCA. Black Tape for a Blue Girl band that plays dark wave

Black Tape for a Blue Girl is an American dark wave band formed in 1986 by Projekt Records' founder Sam Rosenthal. Their music takes on elements of dark wave, ethereal, ambient, neoclassical, and dark cabaret music. Director David Lynch is one of their more well-known fans. Their 12th album, To touch the milky way, was released on October 26, 2018 on Projekt Records.

William Tucker was a guitarist whose credits included work with Ministry, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, Pigface, Chemlab, and Chris Connelly. He grew up in New Jersey where he formed Regressive Aid with Andrew Weiss and Sim Cain. He also taught the guitar to locals, one of whom was Mickey "Dean Ween" Melchiondo of the alternative band Ween.

Rosenthal ran the fanzine Alternative Rhythms in South Florida and Ogle wrote for the magazine as a concert and record reviewer. The two had been friends since middle school. After releasing a cassette (most of which can be heard as hidden tracks on the band's first LP) the band went into hibernation. During this time Ogle played on various black tape for a blue girl LPs. The title track of the LP "this lush garden within" began life as a Thanatos song. The group became a live act in 1995 after the release of their second LP with the addition of Tucker and Eric Polcyn (Godbullies).

My initial idea was to remix songs from Remnants of a Deeper Purity, focusing on the string sections; a recycling program of sorts. When I started working on With My Sorrows parts 2 + 3, I heard “new songs” evolving out of the suddenly stripped bare string tracks.
