Neil Hamburger is a fictional standup comedian and singer, created and portrayed by Australian-American entertainer Gregg Turkington, who is characterized by his misanthropic jokes and anti-comedy style. Turkington has released a number of albums as Hamburger and has appeared as the character in various films, television shows, and other media. In 2015, the act inspired the feature-length film Entertainment, which stars Turkington as a "variant" of the Neil Hamburger character.

Gregg Turkington is an Australian-American entertainer, actor, musician, and writer who performs as Neil Hamburger, a stand-up comedian persona he developed in the 1990s. Alongside Tim Heidecker, Turkington also stars as a fictionalized version of himself on the comedic web series On Cinema (2011–Present). In addition, he formed one-half of the band Zip Code Rapists and has collaborated on numerous projects with musicians including Trey Spruance.
Robert Donne is a musician and film composer from Richmond, Virginia. He has recorded works with a variety of groups and individuals including Labradford (Kranky), Aix Em Klemm (Kranky), Spokane (Jagjaguwar), Gregor Samsa, Cristal, Pan.American (Kranky), Stephen Vitiello, and most recently Anjou (Kranky). His work as a composer includes Rick Alverson's Entertainment, which premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, and New Jerusalem, as well as Daniel Carbone's Hide Your Smiling Faces.

The Cave Singers is an American band from Seattle, Washington. Composed of former members of Pretty Girls Make Graves after its disbandment in 2007, former PGMG-member Derek Fudesco teamed up with Pete Quirk and Marty Lund and began playing in the Seattle area. Soon after the band's conception, The Cave Singers signed with Matador Records on June 11, 2007. The band spent time recording in Vancouver with music engineer Colin Stewart, who quickly produced the band's first full-length LP. The band released the limited edition single 7" "Seeds Of Night" including b side "After The First Baptism" on August 2, 2007. Invitation Songs, the first LP, was released on September 25, 2007 to critical acclaim. The second single, "Dancing On Our Graves", was released on February 25, 2008.

Secretly Group is a family of American independent record labels based in Bloomington, Indiana. The group is made up of Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguwar, and Dead Oceans. Secretly Canadian, the first of the labels, was formed in 1996 by brothers Chris and Ben Swanson, Eric Weddle, and Jonathan Cargill. Their first release was a re-issue of an album by June Panic. Weddle later left to form label Family Vineyard; the remaining trio were joined by Darius Van Arman, as well as his label Jagjaguwar, in 1999. The two labels had worked closely before Jagjaguwar's offices moved to Bloomington to work alongside Secretly Canadian's.

The plot follows a stand-up comedian as he performs in various locations where the audience is either hostile or indifferent to him. Alverson, Turkington and Tim Heidecker co-wrote the film.
