The Catholic Sun is the official newspaper of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix. The bishop of the diocese publishes the paper once a month and registered Catholics from central to northern Arizona receive it. With a circulation that fluctuates between 115,000 and 125,000, ,The Catholic Sun is the largest Catholic newspaper in the state. The paper was founded in April 1985 under the leadership of Bishop Thomas J. O’Brien and Christopher Gunty. It has won many national and local awards from the Catholic Press Association, the Associated Church Press and the Arizona Newspaper Association.

The Diocese of Phoenix is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in the state of Arizona in the United States. It was established on December 2, 1969 when it was split off from the Diocese of Tucson. Dale Fushek is the founder of Life Teen, the leader of the Praise and Worship Center in Chandler, Arizona, and the former Vicar General of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix. In 2005 he was charged with ten criminal misdemeanor counts related to alleged sexual contact with teenage boys and young adult males. By February 2010, the charges were adjusted to four counts contributing to the delinquency of a minor and one count of indecent exposure. On April 15, 2010, Fushek agreed to a plea bargain offered by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office in which he pled guilty to one of the charges. The four other charges were dropped and he was fined $250, in addition to being sentenced to 364 days of probation.
