History

In 1976, a few Nomad rugby players were drinking at the Tranzac Club. Discussion moved on from the Nomads' latest performance on the pitch to acting and the plays they had done back home and the Nomads Acting Group (NAGs) was born. The Nomads put on their first performances of "Cupid is a Bum, Is a Bum, Is a Bum" and "Meet the Folks" on April Fools' Day, 1976 at the Tranzac. [1] The plays were a huge success. So great in fact, the NAGs decided to continue putting on shows year after year. [2] [3] [4]

NAGs Today

These days the NAGs put on a British-style pantomime (both children's matinees and "big children" nights with a bar) in February, and a spring and fall show, all of which are still held at the Tranzac club in the Annex. [5] You will still find the odd Nomad player taking part in the shows and if not on stage, then you are sure to find them in the audience. [6] [7]

John Rich (producer) British theatre producer

John Rich (1692–1761) was an important director and theatre manager in 18th-century London. He opened the New Theatre at Lincoln's Inn Fields (1714), which he managed until he opened the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden (1732). He managed Covent Garden until 1761, putting on ever more lavish productions. He introduced pantomime to the English stage and played a dancing and mute Harlequin himself from 1717 to 1760 under the stage name of "Lun." Rich's version of the servant character, Arlecchino, moved away from the poor, disheveled, loud, and crude character, to a colorfully-dressed, silent Harlequin, performing fanciful tricks, dances and magic. The British idea of the Harlequin character was heavily inspired by Rich's idea of a silent character. Rich's choice of being a silent character was influenced by his unappealing voice, which he was well aware of.
