Champaign is the tenth-most populous city in Illinois, and the state's fourth-most populous city outside the Chicago metropolitan area. It is included in the Champaign–Urbana metropolitan area.

The company owns several student-run media outlets associated with the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign: the general newspaper, the Daily Illini; the entertainment paper, Buzz Magazine; the engineering quarterly, Technograph; the U of I yearbook, the Illio; and the commercial radio station, WPGU.
WHMS-FM, is a soft adult contemporary formatted radio station in Champaign, Illinois. The station is owned by The News-Gazette, the primary newspaper in the Champaign-Urbana area. The station slogan is "Lite Rock 97.5," and the station has an output power of 50 kW. WHMS-FM serves both the Champaign-Urbana, and Danville markets in East Central Illinois.
The Illini and Saluki are a pair of passenger trains operated by Amtrak along a 310-mile (500 km) route between Chicago and Carbondale, Illinois. They are part of Amtrak's Illinois Service and are primarily funded by the state of Illinois. The route is coextensive with the far northern leg of the long-distance City of New Orleans. The Illini has operated since 1973; a previous version operated in 1971–1972 between Chicago and Champaign. The Saluki debuted in 2006.

Suburban Express was a bus service that provided transport services to students at six universities in the American Midwest, primarily to and from the Chicago area. Airport shuttles were operated under the name "Illini Shuttle". The company contracted buses from other carriers, and was based in Champaign, Illinois.
The News-Gazette is a daily newspaper serving eleven counties in the eastern portion of Central Illinois and specifically the Champaign–Urbana metropolitan area. Since November 2019 it is published daily Tuesday through Sunday. Based in Champaign, Illinois, the paper is owned, along with sister radio stations WDWS, WKIO and WHMS, by Community Media Group, Inc., which purchased it in November 2019 after the paper filed for bankruptcy.

Carol Ammons is a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives who has represented the 103rd district since January 2015. The 103rd district covers the heart of the Champaign–Urbana metropolitan area, including most of Champaign and Urbana. She is the first African American woman to serve in the seat, and the first from Champaign County to be elected beyond the County Board level. Ammons is a co-chair of the Illinois House's Progressive Caucus.
The Champaign Velvets was the primary name of the minor league baseball franchise based in Champaign, Illinois and neighboring Urbana, Illinois. Champaign and Urbana teams played as members of the Illinois-Indiana League (1889) and Class D Illinois-Missouri League (1911–1914).
