The Hiligaynon people, often referred to as Ilonggo people, are a subgroup of the Visayan people whose primary language is the Hiligaynon language, an Austronesian language native to Panay, Guimaras, and Negros. Over the years, inter-migrations and intra-migrations have contributed to the diaspora of the Hiligaynons to different parts of the Philippines. Now, the Hiligaynon form the majority in the provinces of Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Guimaras, Capiz, South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and North Cotabato.

The Daily Guardian is an English-language tabloid newspaper circulating in Iloilo City, the Philippines, with its intended audience being the Western Visayas region and with a specific focus on the provinces of Iloilo, Guimaras, and Negros Occidental. It was founded in 2000 by Kayo and Partners, a respected publishing firm based in Iloilo City and composed of some of Iloilo's finest journalists. Lemuel Fernandez is its publisher while Francis Allan L. Angelo is its current editor-in-chief.

It is a subsidiary of Phividec Railways Inc. of the Philippine Veterans Investment Development Corporation (Philvedec). The railway current doesn't operate any trains but it leases the property that it owns and the revenue is used to defray the personnel and administrative costs incurred from looking after its assets.
