The Panther (Sam Brushell)

The Panther was a Mohegan Indian who lived in the Town of Richfield in Otsego County, New York in the beginning to mid 1800s. He was the son of an Indian named Captain John. [1]

Biography

Brushell's father was known as Captain John; they had a wigwam for a time built on Tunnicliff land near a lake. [2] After his father's death he moved back to the Connecticut Valley where he and his father had moved from. He remained there a few years and then returned to the grave of his father, and build a Wigwam on the Chamberlin Farm in the Town of Richfield. [3]

The Panther was a peaceful Indian who would frequently give bows and arrows to children. [4] He took the liberty to cut timber on any property when he wanted, regarding it as his right as a native of the forest. He also believed that where he left his possessions, that they should be safe from trespassers. On one occasion he followed two people who rode his canoe to Deowongo Island, beat them both with the paddles, and left them stranded on the island to get off the best way they could. And another time Mr. Olcott Chamberlin, son of Freedom Chamberlain, took The Panther's boat at night with a torch to fish along shore. As he was sailing along shore he heard a voice say "come, shore my boat" which he ignored. The Panther then shot above the boat which persuaded Mr. Chamberlin to come to shore. [5]

The Panther left on a normal visit to Connecticut around 1846 and did not return to Otsego County.

The creek begins by the Hamlet of Schuyler Lake and flows southeast approximately 9.32 miles (15.00 km), dropping only 105 feet (32 m) in elevation, before converging with the Susquehanna River south of the Village of Cooperstown, by the Hamlet of Index. From the source to Oaksville the creek flows along Panther Mountain. Fly Creek is a main tributary, that converges with Oaks Creek south of the Hamlet of Fly Creek.

Oaksville is a hamlet west of Cooperstown on conjoined NY-28/NY-80, in the Town of Otsego, New York, in Otsego County, New York, United States. Oaks Creek flows south through the hamlet.

Monticello is a hamlet west of Richfield Springs located at the corner of CR-24 and CR-25 in the Town of Richfield, Otsego County, New York, United States. The community is known by its historic name of Monticello. It was once a busy hamlet along the Skaneateles Turnpike. The source of Hyder Creek is near the hamlet. Richfield Springs bears a street over a hill on the southwest of the village called Monticello Street, which leads directly to the hamlet.

Panther Mountain is a mountain located in Central New York of New York near Fly Creek, New York and Schuyler Lake, New York. The east side of Panther Mountain drains into Fly Creek and the west side drains into Oaks Creek and Canadarago Lake.

Fitch Hill is a mountain located in Central New York Region of New York by Pierstown. Fitch Hill is named after the Fitch family who were early settlers in the area.
