The Schemers was a Providence, Rhode Island, hard rock band that existed between 1979 and 1987. The band was signed to Big Bubble Records.

History

The band's first live show was a support slot for Sam & Dave, and they also supported Jerry Lee Lewis, Ramones, Tom Verlaine, and Dead Kennedys. [1]

The Schemers were the winners of the 1982 WBRU Radio Rock Hunt in Providence and the 1984 Rock 'n' Roll Rumble in Boston. [2] [3] Their single, "Remember," was the number-one song on WBRU for over 10 weeks in early-1982. [4]

Band members from the original lineup included Jimmy Berger, Rene Blais, Emerson Torrey, and lead singer and songwriter Mark Cutler. [1] [5]

Cutler announced his decision to leave the band in 1986, but continued to play with the band in 1987 for their remaining live commitments, the band finally splitting up in January 1987. [6] [7]

Mark Cutler later founded the Raindogs with Darren Hill and Jim Reilly (of Stiff Little Fingers) and Celtic fiddle king Johnny Cunningham, formerly of Silly Wizard. Emerson Torrey joined the band after original guitarist Ty Avolio left in 1987. [8] Cutler also went on to play in Men of Great Courage, the Tiny String Band, Dino Club, and Forever Young. [1]

The Schemers only album was released in 2004; [2] Remember compiled their earlier recordings as well as ten new recordings. [2] The band reformed several times for live performances, including shows in 2010 with Cutler, Berger, and Torrey joined by drummer Bob Guisti and keyboard player Richard Reed. Guisti was replaced by drummer Rick Couto in 2010. The Schemers continue to perform several times a year. [1] [2]

In 2015, The Schemers were inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame. [9]

The Amica Mutual Pavilion is an indoor arena located in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. It was built in 1972, as a home court for the Providence College Friars men's basketball program, due to the high demand for tickets to their games in Alumni Hall, as well as for a home arena for the then–Providence Reds, who played in the nearly 50-year-old Rhode Island Auditorium. Current tenants include the Providence Bruins ice hockey team, of the American Hockey League (AHL) and the Providence College Friars men's basketball team, of the Big East Conference. WBRU is an internet radio station based in Providence, Rhode Island. The station is owned and operated by Brown Broadcasting Service, an independent non-profit organization, and is primarily staffed by students from Brown University.

Progressive rock is a radio station programming format that emerged in the late 1960s, in which disc jockeys are given wide latitude in what they may play, similar to the freeform format but with the proviso that some kind of rock music is almost always played. It enjoyed the height of its popularity in the late 1960s and 1970s. The name for the format began being used circa 1968, when serious disc jockeys were playing "progressive 'music for the head'" and discussing social issues in between records. During the late 1960s, as long-playing records began to supplant the single in popularity with rock audiences, progressive rock stations placed more emphasis on album tracks than did their AM counterparts. Throughout the 1970s, as FM stations moved to more structured formats, progressive rock evolved into album-oriented rock (AOR).

The Raindogs were a band formed in Boston, United States, around 1985 after several members had disbanded the rock band The Schemers. They combined Celtic and American music to form their own hybrid of rock and roll. Based in Boston, the band was made up of Mark Cutler, Emerson Torrey, members of recently disbanded New Orleans band Red Rockers Darren Hill and Jim Reilly, and Johnny Cunningham, formerly of Silly Wizard. The Rhode Island–based Schemers had previously won the Providence Rock Hunt and the Boston Rock Rumble band competitions, and their single, Remember was widely played on Providence, Rhode Island FM radio stations.

Someday Providence is an alternative/rock/reggae band from Providence, Rhode Island, United States. They are known for their seasonal song "Summertime in Rhode Island", which used to be played every year on WBRU during the summer. They have been acknowledged as heavy hitters in the local scene by winning "Best Breakthrough Act (2006)" and "Best Local Act (2007)" award in the annual Providence Phoenix Best Music Poll. 2008 showed them similar favor as finalists in the WBRU Rock Hunt. The Providence Journal called them "one of Rhode Island’s best-ever good-time bands".

Grüvis Malt were an American six-piece band founded in Providence, Rhode Island in 1995. They have released seven full-length albums, one of them issued by the Lakeshore Entertainment subsidiary Lakeshore Records, and three EPs. The other albums were released independently under Grüvis Malt's self-run label, Integers Only.
