The Basters are a Southern African ethnic group descended from Cape Coloureds and Nama of Khoisan origin. Since the second half of the 19th century, the Rehoboth Baster community has been concentrated in central Namibia, in and around the town of Rehoboth. Basters are closely related to Afrikaners, Cape Coloureds, and Griquas of South Africa and Namibia, with whom they share a largely Afrikaner-influenced culture and Afrikaans language. Other groups of similar mixed ethnic origin, living chiefly in the Northern Cape, also refer to themselves as Basters.

McHenry Venaani is a Namibian politician and the President of the Popular Democratic Movement, a party with five seats in the National Assembly of Namibia and one seat in the National Council of Namibia. Venaani was contesting for a presidential race which took place on the 27th November 2024. Venaani has been a member of the National Assembly from 2002 to 2010, in 2014, and since 2015. At the time of his appointment in 2002, he was Namibia's youngest MP. He was one of the three candidates standing for election as Paramount Chief of the Ovaherero Traditional Authority in January 2023, competing against Hoze Riruako and Mike Kavekotora.
Hermanus van Wyk (1835–1905) was the first Kaptein of the Baster community at Rehoboth in South-West Africa, today Namibia. Under his leadership, the mixed-race Basters moved from the Northern Cape to leave white racial discrimination, and migrated into the interior of what is now central Namibia; the first 30 families settled about 1870. They acquired land from local natives and were joined by additional Baster families over the following years. The Baster people developed their own constitution, called the Paternal Laws. They relied on the herding of sheep, goats and cattle as the basis of their economy.

The Captainsof the Rehoboth Baster were the traditional leaders of the indigenous Baster community in central Namibia, until the dissolution of the Rehoboth Homeland in 1990, upon Namibian independence.
Spoorloos is a South African crime drama anthology television series created by Ilse van Hemert and developed by Ochre Moving Pictures. The first season is based on the 2014 novel Daddy Long Legs by Vernon W. Baumann and set in the fictional town of Digtersdal in the Eastern Cape. Each subsequent season follows a new small town and cast of characters.
Measures of Men is a 2023 German drama film directed by Lars Kraume. Starring Leonard Scheicher as an ethnologist, the film tells the story of the Herero and Namaqua genocide which was perpetrated in German South West Africa between 1904 and 1908. It had its world premiere on 22nd February 2023 at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival in Berlinale Special. It was released in cinemas on March 23, 2023. Measures of Men is about Germany’s colonial history and relegates the Nama and Ovaherero.
Under the Hanging Tree is a 2023 Namibian film directed and written by filmmaker Perivi Katjavivi. The movie explores themes of historical trauma, identity, and cultural displacement, set against the backdrop of Namibia's colonial past. The film became Namibia's first-ever official submission for the Academy Award for Best International Feature on the occasion of the 96th Academy Awards.
