Thomas Emerson (born 1993) is an Australian politician who is currently a member for the seat of Kurrajong in the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly. He is the leader and co-founder of Independents for Canberra. [2]
From the age of 16,Emerson spent seven years with chronic hip,lower back and shoulder problems. [3] After graduating with a philosophy degree from the Australian National University (ANU) in 2017,he founded Praksis,a Canberra-based movement studio. [4] [5]
During the 2022 federal election,Emerson volunteered for independent candidate David Pocock. [6] After Pocock was successful in his election as an ACT senator,Emerson began to work for him as an advisor. [6] [7]
In January 2024,Emerson co-founded Independents for Canberra (IFC) ahead of the 2024 ACT election. [8] On 31 May,IFC announced Emerson and Sara Poguet as the party's lead candidates for the electorate of Kurrajong. [9] Emerson,along with Fiona Carrick (who contested with her own Fiona Carrick Independent party) became the first independents elected to the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly in 23 years. Emerson's father is Craig Emerson,who served as the federal Minister for Small Business and Minister for Trade and Competitiveness in the Rudd-Gillard government. [12]

David Willmer Pocock is an Australian politician and former professional rugby union player. Raised in Gweru,Zimbabwe,Pocock moved to Australia as a teenager and played for the Australia national rugby team. He played primarily at openside flanker,and was vice captain of the Brumbies in Super Rugby. After his retirement,Pocock worked as a conservationist and social justice advocate. In the 2022 Australian federal election,Pocock ran as an independent candidate for one of the Australian Capital Territory's two Senate seats. He defeated Liberal incumbent senator Zed Seselja,ending the two major parties' duopoly on the ACT's Senate delegation which had been in place since the ACT was granted Senate representation in 1975.
Shane Stephen Rattenbury is an Australian politician who currently serves as the Attorney-General of the Australian Capital Territory and a member of the multi-member district unicameral Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly representing the electorate of Molonglo from 2008 to 2016 and the electorate of Kurrajong since 2016 for the ACT Greens. He was previously the Speaker of the ACT Legislative Assembly,and was the first Speaker in any parliament in the world representing a Green political party.
The 2013 Australian federal election to elect the members of the 44th Parliament of Australia took place on Saturday 7 September 2013. The centre-right Liberal/National Coalition opposition led by Opposition leader Tony Abbott of the Liberal Party of Australia and Coalition partner the National Party of Australia,led by Warren Truss,defeated the incumbent centre-left Labor Party government of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in a landslide. It was also the third time in history that a party won 90 or more seats at an Australian election. Labor had been in government for six years since being elected in the 2007 election. Abbott was sworn in by the Governor-General,Quentin Bryce,as Australia's new prime minister on 18 September 2013,along with the Abbott Ministry. The 44th Parliament of Australia opened on 12 November 2013,with the members of the House of Representatives and territory senators sworn in. The state senators were sworn in by the next Governor-General Peter Cosgrove on 7 July 2014,with their six-year terms commencing on 1 July.
