Thomas Hardy's Ale is a Barley wine named after famous English novelist and poet Thomas Hardy. The brand has gone under numerous owners over the years, but now is currently brewed under contract at Meantime Brewery.
In 1968, Eldridge Pope Brewery created a barley wine recipe to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of Thomas Hardy. A pint bottle sold for an English pound, a large sum of money at the time. [1] It was meant to be a one-off brew, but in 1974 a second vintage was created. [2] In 1999 the brewery stopped making the beer and the following year the brewery shut its doors. [3] In 2003 beverage exporter George Saxon bought the recipe and licensed it to be produced by O'Hanlon’s Brewery, but that arrangement ended in 2008. [4] In 2013 Interbrau purchased the recipe and after three years began brewing the beer at Meantime Brewing. [5]
Each label has the date and batch number. [6] The original label suggested "This beer will improve if kept lying down at 55°F [13°C] and will last at least 25 years. DO NOT OPEN BEFORE JULY 1969.” [2]
Barley wine is a strong ale from 6–12% alcohol by volume.

Anchor Brewing Company was a brewery on Potrero Hill in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1896, the brewery has undergone several changes in location and ownership throughout its history. After years of declining sales due to competition with larger breweries, Anchor was purchased by Frederick Louis “Fritz” Maytag III in 1965, preventing its closure. The brewery operated at its current location since 1979 and was one of the last remaining producers of steam beer, a variety of beer trademarked by the company.

Genesee Brewing Company is an American brewery located along the Genesee River in Rochester, New York. From 2000 to 2009, the company was known as the High Falls Brewing Company. In 2009, High Falls was acquired by the capital investment firm KPS Capital. Together with newly acquired Labatt USA, KPS merged the two companies as North American Breweries. Along with this change, High Falls Brewery changed its name back to the original "Genesee Brewing Company" operating under the North American Breweries name. In October 2012, North American Breweries was purchased by FIFCO.

A barrel-aged beer is a beer that has been aged for a period of time in a wooden barrel. Typically, these barrels once housed bourbon, whisky, wine, or, to a lesser extent, brandy, sherry, or port. There is a particular tradition of barrel ageing beer in Belgium, notably of lambic beers. The first bourbon barrel-aged beers were produced in the United States in the early 1990s.
