Tides' Thoreau Center for Sustainability are green nonprofit centers that house more than 70 nonprofit organizations in San Francisco and New York City. [1] Thoreau Centers for Sustainability are operated by Tides Shared Spaces, a Tides initiative. [1]

It manages two centers in San Francisco and New York that offer collaborative spaces for social ventures and other nonprofits.

History

In 1994, the Thoreau Center for Sustainability was proposed to The Presidio Trust in San Francisco, California and opened in 1996. It is an adaptive reuse of the Letterman Army Hospital.

Adaptive reuse refers to the process of reusing an existing building for a purpose other than which it was originally built or designed for. Adaptive reuse is an effective strategy for optimizing the operational and commercial performance of built assets. Adaptive reuse of buildings can be an attractive alternative to new construction in terms of sustainability and a circular economy. Not every old building can qualify for adaptive reuse. Architects, developers, builders and entrepreneurs who wish to become involved in rejuvenating and reconstructing a building must first make sure that the finished product will serve the need of the market, that it will be completely useful for its new purpose, and that it will be competitively priced.

Letterman Army Hospital hospital

The Letterman Army Hospital — established around 1898 and redesignated as the Letterman Army Medical Center (LAMC) in 1969 — was a U.S. Army facility located on the Presidio of San Francisco in San Francisco, California, USA. It was decommissioned in 1994. Some of the original 1898 buildings still exist and now house the Thoreau Center for Sustainability. The Letterman Army Medical Center built in the 1960s era was completely demolished to make way for Lucas Digital Arts.

In 2006, a Thoreau Center for Sustainability opened in Lower Manhattan, New York.

Historically part of the Presidio of San Francisco, Crissy Field closed as an airfield after 1974. Under Army control, the site was affected by dumping of hazardous materials. The National Park Service took control of the area in 1994 and, together with the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, worked to restore the site until 2001, when the Crissy Field Center was opened to the public. While most buildings have been preserved as they were in the 1920s, some have been transformed into offices, retail space, and residences.
