Torrey Pines Golf Course is a 36-hole municipal golf facility in La Jolla, a community of San Diego, California. The course sits on the coastal cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just south of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Opened in 1957, it was built on the site of Camp Callan, a U.S. Army installation during World War II. Torrey Pines has two 18-hole courses, North and South, designed by William Francis Bell. The course is named for the Torrey pine, a rare tree that grows in the area.

The Official World Golf Ranking is a system for rating the performance level of professional golfers. It was started in 1986. The rankings are based on a player's position in individual tournaments over a "rolling" two-year period. New rankings are calculated each week. In 2024, 23 tours factored into the world rankings. It marked the first time that live golf had been shown in prime time during the week in the United States.

The purse for the unofficial PGA Tour event was $9 million, with the winner taking the entire amount. Mickelson won the match after 22 holes, including four playoff holes. After the success of the event, it became the first in an irregular series of events under the brand of The Match, with both Mickelson and Woods participating in the rematch, and Mickelson also participating in the two editions after that.
