Holmcroft is also a Ward of Stafford Borough Council. Holmcroft Road was the name chosen by the council for the street that connects the residential area to the A34 Stone Road. Thus Holmcroft or Holmcroft Estate became part of the postal address. Even for estate homes not located on Holmcroft Road. The name means "croft by the island", from Old Norse holmr "island" and Old English croft "croft". The name was recorded as Holimcroft in 1183.

Sir William Gregory was a British judge and politician. Born the son of the vicar of Fownhope, he was educated at Hereford Cathedral School and All Souls College, Oxford and was then called to the Bar from Gray's Inn. In 1653 he married Katharine, only daughter and heiress of James Smith of Tillington, by whom he had an only son, James, who died in 1691 before his father. It was not until 1677 that William gained prominence, being elected a Serjeant-at-law. In March 1677 the election of Sir Thomas Williams as a Member of Parliament for Weobly was called into question and declared void, so William Gregory offered himself as a candidate and was elected without opposition on 9 March.

Tillington is an ancient geographic district about 1½ miles north of Stafford town centre, in the county of Staffordshire, England. Essentially, the district lies within a triangle formed by Eccleshall Road, Stone Road and Crab Lane that narrows southward to a point where the two roads join at Foregate Street. Since records were first kept, the area has been recorded as Tillington. In more modern times, the geographic area comprises Tillington, Holmcroft and Trinity Fields as designated Wards of Stafford Borough Council, along with part of the parish of Creswell, Staffordshire.
