Timeline.Watch is an interactive website that features images and text about vintage and rare wristwatches produced since 1900. Worn & Wound Company called Timeline.Watch “one of the most phenomenal watch collections – vintage or modern – that you can view online.” [1]
Journalists covering the wristwatch industry have described Timeline.Watch as distinct from other online sources of information about timepieces -- such as individual watch company collections or “watch identifier” websites – because of its broad range of entries, extensive list of search functions, detailed text and multiple photographs of each watch, and for encouraging participation and submissions from watch collectors worldwide. [1] [2] [3]
As a resource for wristwatch enthusiasts and historians, Timeline.Watch was described by Hodinkee magazine as “a kind of paradise if you are passionate about vintage watches.” [3]
The website was created by Dan Henry, a watch enthusiast and manufacturer who was called by Wristwatch Review “one of the most knowledgeable collectors and watchmakers in the world.” [4]
Henry, who has collected watches since he received a pocket watch as a gift for his 10th birthday, [4] has in 36 years built an assemblage of timepieces described by Monochrome Magazine as “one of the most impressive and expansive collections in existence.” [1]
Henry wanted to share information about his own collection while bringing together wristwatch enthusiasts worldwide, [1] so in December 2014 he opened an Instagram account to distribute photos and information about his timepieces. Time & Tide Watches reported that if "looking to beef up your vintage (watch) knowledge...then your first stop should be Dan Henry's Instagram page." [2] By March 2018, Henry’s account had more than 15,000 followers. [5]
To expand the amount of information about watches that could be accessed and analyzed by collectors, in 2015, Henry created Timeline.Watch. [3]
Built in WordPress, [1] as of March 2018 Timeline.Watch includes entries for more than 1,500 watches, with a detailed biography and 1-8 photographs for each model. [3]
Timeline.Watch also serves as an online database of timepieces that can be sorted and viewed in 17 categories, including model, brand, and production year; as well as based on their styles and functions (such as diver, alarm, extra-flat, triple calendar, and others). [3]
Wristwatch Review called Timeline.Watch “one of the most significant online timepiece research sites on the Internet.” [4]
As of March 2018, Timeline.Watch had been viewed by more than 135,000 users.
In part because of the response to Timeline.Watch, Henry created Dan Henry Watches, a microband watch manufacturer that is notable for every model in its collection being designed with the styles and features of prominent timepieces of the past 80 years. [2]
A stated goal of Timeline.Watch is to involve watch collectors in an “online global collective of treasured watches.” [3] Submission is open to all wristwatch collectors.
