Southern Railway zone Railway zone of Indian Railways

The Southern Railway, headquartered at Chennai, is one of the 18 zones of Indian Railways. It is the earliest of the 18 zones of the Indian Railways created in independent India. It was created on 14 April 1951 by merging three state railways, namely, the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway Company, and the Mysore State Railway. The South Indian Railway was originally created in the British colonial times as Great Southern India Railway Co founded in Britain in 1853 and registered in 1859. Its original headquarters was in Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) and was registered as a company in London only in 1890. At present, after re-organization of existing railway zones and creation of new zones undertaken by the Indian Railways between 2002–03, Southern Railway has emerged as the 4th largest zone after undertaking some gauge conversion projects and creation of new lines.

Professor Ramaswami Venkataswami is a plastic surgeon, founder of the Institute for the Research and Rehabilitation of Hand and the Department of Plastic Surgery of Stanley Medical College and Hospitals (SMC), Chennai, India. He founded the department in 1971 and headed it until 1991 when he retired from Government service. His major accomplishments include the creation of a dedicated hand injury service with staff, beds and operating theatre dedicated to the service. The service provided 24/7 management of acute hand injuries and housed all specialities related to the long-term management of such injuries - including physiotherapy, occupational health, and workplace rehabilitation. He also initiated the use of microsurgical methods in the repair and reconstruction at Stanley in 1978-79. He is an alumnus of SMC and an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences.
