The Uganda Program on Cancer and Infectious Diseases (UPCID), established in 2004, is a joint program between Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle and the Uganda Cancer Institute. The program works to understand and treat infection-related cancers in the United States and abroad.

Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) is a public, specialized, tertiary care medical facility owned by the Uganda Ministry of Health. The facility is located along Upper Mulago Hill Road, on Mulago Hill, in the Kawempe Division of Kampala, about 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi) northeast of the central business district of the city. The geographical coordinates of the institute are: 00°20'29.0"N, 32°34'40.0"E.

Makerere University, Kampala is Uganda's largest and third-oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922. In 1963, it became the University of East Africa, offering courses leading to general degrees from the University of London. It became an independent national university in 1970 when the University of East Africa was split into three independent universities: University of Nairobi (Kenya), University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), and Makerere University. Today, Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school offering programmes for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates.

Kampala is the capital and largest city of Uganda. The city is divided into five boroughs that oversee local planning: Kampala Central Division, Kawempe Division, Makindye Division, Nakawa Division, and Rubaga Division. Surrounding Kampala is the rapidly growing Wakiso District, whose population more than doubled between 2002 and 2014 and as of 2014 Wakiso was reported to stand at over 2 million.

Leadership collaboration

The collaboration is co-led by Corey Casper, a physician-scientist at the Hutchinson Center and Jackson Orem, director of the Uganda Cancer Institute.[ citation needed ]

Funding

In October 2009, the United States Agency for International Development awarded a US$500,000 grant to the Hutchinson Center to aid in the construction of the first United States cancer clinic and medical-training facility in Africa.[ citation needed ]

Victoria Walusansa-Abaliwano, is a Ugandan physician and oncologist, who works as the Deputy Director of the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI), a cancer treatment and research institution, based in Kampala, Uganda and serving the countries of the African Great Lakes area.
