Ursa Major is an upcoming American science fiction thriller film directed by sibling directors Jonathan and Josh Baker who previously directed 2018's Kin. It is an original script by Patrick Somerville, the Emmy-nominated creator of HBO Max series Station Eleven, who co-wrote the screenplay with Colleen O’Brien and Katie French. The film stars Jessica Biel, Xochitl Gomez, and Scott Mescudi.
The film follows Charlie and Natalie, mother and daughter fighting for survival on an Earth-like planet, hiding from a group of relentless hunters with the added threat of an imminent and deadly storm. Natalie, now a teenager, has begun to question her mother’s decisions, her explanation of who they are, how they got here and what they need to do to survive. [1]
In August 2022, it was announced that Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Xochitl Gomez would star together as mother and daughter in a sci-fi thriller film, set on a terraformed planet. The film will be directed by Jonathan and Josh Baker, who have a background in this genre as they also directed 2018 sci-fi action film Kin which was an adaptation of their 2015 short film Bag Man. [1] The film's screenplay was co-written by Patrick Somerville, Colleen O'Brien, and Katie French. Somerville will also be one of the producers for the film. Lost City's James Hoppe and Jack Byrnes will serve as executive producers in association with XYZ Films, which will also be in charge of worldwide sales of Ursa Major. It is one of the movies that XYZ Films plans to try to sell at the Toronto International Film Festival. [1] [2] In April 2023, it was announced that Jessica Biel had replaced Winstead as Charlie, who had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. [3] In May 2023, Scott Mescudi joined the cast. [4]
