Kenneth Robert Rosewall is a former world top-ranking amateur and professional tennis player from Australia. He won a record 23 tennis Majors, including 8 Grand Slam singles titles and, before the Open Era, a record 15 Pro Slam titles; overall, he reached a record 35 Major finals. He won the Pro Grand Slam in 1963. Rosewall won 9 slams in doubles with a career double grand slam. He is considered to be one of the greatest tennis players of all time. He had a renowned backhand and enjoyed a long career at the highest levels from the early 1950s to the early 1970s. Rosewall was one of the two best male players for about nine years and was the World No. 1 player for a number of years in the early 1960s. He was ranked among the top 20 players, amateur or professional, every year from 1952 through 1977. Rosewall is the only player to have simultaneously held Pro Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces (1962–1963). At the 1971 Australian Open he became the first male player during the open era to win a Grand Slam tournament without dropping a set. Rosewall won pro world championship tours in 1963, 1964, and the WCT titles in 1971 and 1972.

The 1969 Italian Open Championships was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament that was played on outdoor clay courts at the Foro Italico in Rome, Italy. It was the 26th edition of the tournament and the first that was open to amateur and professional players. The event was held from 21 April through 28 April 1969 and finished a day late. The singles titles were won by second-seeded John Newcombe and Julie Heldman, the first American female player to win the title in 13 years.

Peter Howard Wilcock is an English professional golfer. He won the Italian BP Open in 1972 and represented England in the 1973 World Cup. Wilcock is remembered for scoring a hole-in-one on two successive days in the 1974 Penfold Tournament. On the second day he holed out at the 133-yard 5th hole winning a saloon car worth nearly £2,000, providing that no other professional achieved the feat during the tournament. He took out an insurance policy against this eventuality and then holed out again on the third day, at the 176-yard 11th hole.
