Waverley Action for Youth Services (WAYS) is a non-profit organisation based in Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, Australia. The organisation provides a range of social support services for children and young people include a youth centre, children's activities, music tuition, alternative education, counselling, employment and training services. WAYS provides workshops at local schools in areas such as drugs and alcohol, resilience, peer relationships and bullying. [2]

History

WAYS was established in 1979, and has been assisting youth (ages 9–25) from Sydney's Eastern, Inner and Southern suburbs. Their services include recreation, education and training, case management, counselling, health promotion and clinical services. [4]

The service was recognised by the NSW Parliament as a notable support service for the community, helping young people for over 35 years. [5]

Following allegations of a rape of a young women in the community, Waverley Mayor Sally Betts, sought to introduce a school education program at WAYS intended for girls to minimise “risky behaviour”. [6] The board of WAYS distanced themselves from the Mayor following criticism of the move. [7]

Sally Betts is a South African-Australian Liberal local government politician. First elected as a Councillor for Waverley Council in the eastern suburbs of Sydney in 1995, she was the Mayor of Waverley from 2008–2011 and 2012–2017, and the Liberal Party candidate for the seat of Waverley at the 1988 New South Wales state election.

WAYS runs a sexual health clinic for youth. The clinic is located in Bondi Junction. [8]

In 2004, WAYS sought to purchase the old Bondi Police Station to provide emergency accommodation for young people in the Eastern Suburbs, news of the potential sale became publicized after the NSW Police Department revalued the property, making the cost of the sale too high for WAYS. [9]

The Eastern Suburbs Railway is a commuter railway line in Sydney constructed in the 1970s. It is operated by Sydney Trains and has stations at Martin Place, Kings Cross, Edgecliff and Bondi Junction. In addition, it has dedicated platforms at Town Hall, Central and Redfern stations. All of these stations are underground. The Eastern Suburbs railway connects with the Illawarra line at Erskineville, forming the Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line. The line features turnbacks at Central, Martin Place and Bondi Junction. There is also a rarely used cross-over or 'turnout' at Edgecliff. It operates a service every 3 to 5 minutes during weekday peak hours and 8 to 10 minutes at all other times.

Ben Buckler Gun Battery

The Ben Buckler Gun Battery is a heritage-listed fortified former gun emplacement and military installation of the late-Victorian period and now public open space located in the North Bondi locality of Ben Buckler, in the Waverley Municipality of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The gun battery was designed by NSW Colonial Government and built during 1893. It is also known as Ben Buckler Gun Battery 1893, 9.2 Disappearing Gun and Bondi Battery. The property is owned by Waverley Municipal Council. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 15 December 2006.

Bruce Hopkins is a professional lifeguard and head of the Waverley Council lifeguards. He can be seen on the factual television series Bondi Rescue.

Bondi Pavilion building of historic significance

The Bondi Surf Pavilion in Sydney, New South Wales (NSW), Australia, is an outstanding beach cultural icon of Australia, together with the beach, park and surf lifesaving club. The structure is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register 01786 as well as by Waverley Council. The building has also been listed by the Heritage Council. According to the National Trust it "has come to represent the Australian culture of beach bathing and outdoors living". The pavilion was constructed in 1928-29, and is managed by Waverley Council.

Caretakers Cottage organization

Caretakers Cottage is an Australian non-profit, non-governmental organisation based in Sydney assisting children and young adults facing homelessness. Caretakers Cottage is funded by the New South Wales Department of Family and Community Services to provide services for young people across Sydney's South-Eastern district. Services include short-term, emergency accommodation, semi-independent living options, case support and early intervention for young people at risk of homelessness.
