IBM WebSphere Application Server for z/OS is one of the platform implementations of IBM's WebSphere Application Server family. The latest version is Version 9.0. [1]
The open standard interfaces supported by WAS are common across all platforms provided the version and release levels are aligned. However, the functional implementation below the open standard specification line differs between platforms. That allows the specific attributes of the platform to be exploited without jeopardizing the common programming interface at the specification level and above.
The WebSphere Application Server for z/OS V7 product has code to directly exploit the following attributes of the platform:
Version 7.0 of WebSphere Application Server for z/OS provides five functions that are informally known as the "zDiff" functions. They represent specific exploitation of the z/OS platform. Those functions are:
WebSphere Application Server for z/OS V8 introduced the ability to configure application server behavior down to the request level, rather than server level. This function is built upon the existing WLM classification file used to assign WLM transaction classes to identified requests. V8 provided additional XML tags to assign server behavior to requests identified in the XML.

In computing, a Parallel Sysplex is a cluster of IBM mainframes acting together as a single system image with z/OS. Used for disaster recovery, Parallel Sysplex combines data sharing and parallel computing to allow a cluster of up to 32 systems to share a workload for high performance and high availability.

In computer science and engineering, transactional memory attempts to simplify concurrent programming by allowing a group of load and store instructions to execute in an atomic way. It is a concurrency control mechanism analogous to database transactions for controlling access to shared memory in concurrent computing. Transactional memory systems provide high-level abstraction as an alternative to low-level thread synchronization. This abstraction allows for coordination between concurrent reads and writes of shared data in parallel systems.
Virtuoso Universal Server is a middleware and database engine hybrid that combines the functionality of a traditional relational database management system (RDBMS), object–relational database (ORDBMS), virtual database, RDF, XML, free-text, web application server and file server functionality in a single system. Rather than have dedicated servers for each of the aforementioned functionality realms, Virtuoso is an "universal server"; it enables a single multithreaded server process that implements multiple protocols. IBM System Management Facility (SMF) is a component of IBM's z/OS for mainframe computers, providing a standardised method for writing out records of activity to a file. SMF provides full "instrumentation" of all baseline activities running on that IBM mainframe operating system, including I/O, network activity, software usage, error conditions, processor utilization, etc.
A WebSphere Adapter is an IBM system-level software technology, used for creating drivers that a Java application uses to connect to an Enterprise Information System (EIS) WebSphere Adapters conform to version 1.5 of the JCA specification. They can be technology or application adapters. As of 2011, 12 WebSphere Adapters exist which conform to JCA specification.
In IBM mainframes, Workload Manager (WLM) is a base component of MVS/ESA mainframe operating system, and its successors up to and including z/OS. It controls the access to system resources for the work executing on z/OS based on administrator-defined goals. Workload Manager components also exist for other operating systems. For example, an IBM Workload Manager is also a software product for AIX operating system.
In IBM mainframe operating systems from the OS/360 and successors line, a Unit Control Block (UCB) is a memory structure, or a control block, that describes any single input/output peripheral device (unit), or an exposure (alias), to the operating system. Certain data within the UCB also instructs the Input/Output Supervisor (IOS) to use certain closed subroutines in addition to normal IOS processing for additional physical device control.
HiperDispatch is a workload dispatching feature found in the newest IBM mainframe models running recent releases of z/OS. HiperDispatch was introduced in February 2008. Support was added to z/VM in its V6R3 release on July 26, 2013.
IBM WebSphere Optimized Local Adapters is a functional component of IBM's WebSphere Application Server for z/OS that provides an efficient cross-memory mechanism for calls both inbound to WAS z/OS and outbound from z/OS. Because it avoids the overhead of other communication mechanisms, it is capable of high volume exchange of messages. WOLA is an extension to the existing cross-memory exchange mechanism of WAS z/OS, with WOLA providing an external interface so z/OS address spaces outside the WAS z/OS server may participate in cross-memory exchanges. WOLA supports connectivity between a WAS z/OS server and one or more of the following: CICS, IMS, Batch, UNIX Systems Services and ALCS. WOLA was first made available in WAS z/OS Version 7, Fixpack 4 (7.0.0.4). Functional enhancements have appeared in subsequent fixpacks as documented in this article.
The SMF 120 Subtype 9 is a new SMF record made available IBM's WebSphere Application Server for z/OS Version 7. Its design is based on customer feedback regarding the data required when operating WAS z/OS. The previous WAS z/OS SMF records were Subtypes 1, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Those subtypes continue to exist, but Subtype 9 may be viewed as a replacement.
Linux on IBM Z is the collective term for the Linux operating system compiled to run on IBM mainframes, especially IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE servers. Similar terms which imply the same meaning are Linux on zEnterprise, Linux on zSeries, Linux/390, Linux/390x, etc. The three Linux distributions certified for usage on the IBM Z hardware platform are Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise, and Ubuntu.
IBM Power is a line of microprocessors designed and sold by IBM for servers and supercomputers. The name "POWER" was originally presented as an acronym for "Performance Optimization With Enhanced RISC". These processors have been used by IBM in their RS/6000, AS/400, pSeries, iSeries, System p, System i and Power Systems line of servers and supercomputers. They have also been used in data storage devices and workstations by IBM and by other server manufacturers like Bull and Hitachi.
Enduro/X is an open-source middleware platform for distributed transaction processing. It is built on proven APIs such as X/Open group's XATMI and XA. The platform is designed for building real-time microservices based applications with a clusterization option. Enduro/X functions as an extended drop-in replacement for Oracle Tuxedo. The platform uses in-memory POSIX Kernel queues which insures high interprocess communication throughput.
