Van Dyke Parks is an American musician, songwriter, arranger, and record producer who has composed various film and television soundtracks. He is known for his 1967 album Song Cycle and for his lyrics on the Beach Boys' unfinished album Smile. In addition to producing or arranging albums by Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, Phil Ochs, Little Feat, Happy End, Ry Cooder, and Joanna Newsom, Parks has worked with performers such as Syd Straw, Ringo Starr, U2, Grizzly Bear, Inara George, Kimbra, Suzy Williams, and Silverchair.
Brian Wilson Presents Smile is the fifth studio album by Brian Wilson, released in September 2004. Its production began as a series of concert performances which were then adapted for a studio album, as well as a 2005 direct-to-video concert film of the same title. The album received great acclaim and earned Wilson his first Grammy Award, later being featured in several "greatest albums" lists. Upon release, it peaked at number 7 on the UK Albums Chart.

Smile is an unfinished album by American rock band the Beach Boys that was planned to follow their 11th studio album, Pet Sounds (1966). It was to be a twelve-track concept album assembled from short, interchangeable musical fragments similar to the group's 1966 single "Good Vibrations". Instead, the group released the album Smiley Smile (1967), containing stripped-down remakes of some Smile material. Over the next four decades, few of the original Smile tracks were officially released, and the project came to be regarded as the most "legendary" unreleased album in the history of popular music.
