M. William was a veteran Indian politician and a five time Member of the Legislative Assembly hailing from Palliyadi. He was elected twice to Travancore-Cochin assembly and three times to Madras State assembly.
He was elected as a Member of Legislative assembly to Travancore-Cochin Legislative Assembly in 1952 election from Arumana constituency as a Tamil Nadu Congress candidate. [1] He was elected again as a Tamil Nadu Congress candidate from Vilavancode constituency in 1954 election to Travancore-Cochin assembly. [2] He was elected to Tamil Nadu legislative assembly in 1957 and 1962 elections from Vilavancode constituency. [3] [4] and from Killiyur constituency in 1967 election. [5]
The William Children Hospital,Marthandam is named after him.
Travancore–Cochin,officially the United State of Travancore and Cochin and later the State of Travancore–Cochin,was a short-lived state of India. It was formed through the merger of two former kingdoms,Travancore and Cochin on 1 July 1949. Its original capital was Thiruvananthapuram.
Vilavancode,also spelt as Viḷavaṅgōḍu,is a town panchayat in Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu state,India. It is part of territory among several taluks that were with the Thiruvananthapuram district that with the passage of the States Reorganisation Act of 1956 transferred from Thiruvananthapuram district,Travancore-Cochin State to the newly created Kanyakumari district of Madras State.
Paramarthalinga Thanulinga Nadar,also known simply as Thanulingam,was an Indian politician,Tamil Nadu Ellai Poratta Thyagi,and a staunch member of the now defunct Travancore Tamil Nadu Congress and would later emerge as a right-wing activist in the State. He served as a Member of Parliament with the Indian National Congress. In his later life,he served as the State President of the Hindu Munnani and played an active role in furthering Hindutva in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu in the 1980s.
The first legislative assembly Election to the Madras state based on universal adult suffrage was held in 27 March 1952. This was the first election held in Madras state after the Indian Independence. This election was officially known as the 1951 Madras State Election,even though through delays,actual voting didn't take place until early 1952.
The second legislative assembly election to the Madras state was held on 31 March 1957. This was the first election held after the linguistic reorganisation of Madras State in 1956. Indian National Congress and its leader,K. Kamaraj won the election and defeated their rival,Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. In 1954,due to the resignation of C. Rajagopalachari,for his controversial Kula Kalvi Thittam,the leadership of Congress was contested between K. Kamaraj,and C. Subramaniam. Eventually,K. Kamaraj,won the support of the party,was elected leader and chief minister of Madras State in 1954. In a surprise move,he appointed both M. Bhaktavatsalam and C. Subramaniam,to his cabinet,allowing great unity amongst the Congress that ruled the state of Madras,for the next decade. This election saw future DMK leaders M. Karunanidhi and K. Anbazhagan win their first MLA seats in the legislative assembly.
A. Nesamony,sometimes known as Marshal Nesamony,was a political leader from Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu,India. He was the second son of Kesavan Appavu Nadar,born on 12 June 1895 at Nesarpuram,Palliyadi in Vilavancode Taluk,Kanyakumari district. He graduated from Maharaja's College in Thiruvananthapuram,and studied at law college in Thiruvananthapuram. He began practising in 1921. He was among those involved with the merger of four Taluks from Southern Travancore to Tamil Nadu.
R. Ponnappan or R. Ponnappanar was an Indian politician who served as a Congressional leader from the Kanyakumari district and a Member of the Legislative Assembly.

He was elected to the Travancore-Cochin assembly from Thovalai Agastheeswaram constituency in 1952 election as an Indian National Congress candidate. Thovalai Agastheeswaram was a two-member constituency and the other winner was A. Samraj from the same party.
D. D. Daniel was an Indian politician and former Member of the Legislative Assembly. He was elected to the Travancore-Cochin assembly as a Travancore Tamil Nadu Congress candidate from Colachel constituency in Kanyakumari district in 1954 election. This was the first ever election held in this constituency and it happened before Kanyakumari district merged with Tamil Nadu. Also he was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly as an Indian National Congress candidate from Padmanabhapuram constituency in Kanyakumari district in 1957 election.
Alexandar Manual Simon was an Indian politician and former and first Member of the Legislative Assembly. He was elected to the Travancore-Cochin assembly as Tamil Nadu Congress candidate from Vilavancode constituency in Kanyakumari district in 1952 election. This was the first election from this constituency and it happened before Kanyakumari district merged with Tamil Nadu. He was elected again from Kollencode constituency as a Tamil Nadu Congress candidate in 1954 interim election.

Thompson Dharmaraj Daniel also known as T.T.Daniel was an Indian politician and former Member of the Legislative Assembly. He was elected to the Travancore-Cochin assembly as a Travancore Tamil Nadu Congress candidate from Colachel constituency in Kanyakumari district in 1954 election. This was the first ever election held in this constituency and it happened before Kanyakumari district merged with Tamil Nadu. S. Ramaswamy Naidu was an Indian politician and former Member of the Legislative Assembly. He was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly as an Indian National Congress candidate from Sattur constituency in 1952 election,from Sivakasi constituency in 1957 and 1962 elections as Indian National Congress candidate. He was again elected from Sattur constituency as a Swatantra Party candidate in 1967 election.

Balasubramanian Parameswaran was an Indian politician and former Member of the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu. He was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly from Maduranthakam constituency as an Indian National Congress candidate in 1946,1952,and 1962 elections. He was the grandson of Rettamalai Srinivasan,a pioneer in the Scheduled Caste movement. He was educated at the St. Gabriels High School and Presidency College,Madras. He served as private secretary to another Scheduled Caste leader M. C. Rajah. During 7 April 1949 –9 April 1952,he was the minister for Firka development,Khadi,Cottage industries,Fisheries,Cinchona and Harijan uplift in the P.S Kumaraswamy Raja ministry. During 1952–54,he was the mayor of Madras. From 13 April 1954 until 31 March 1957,he was the minister for Transport,Harijan Uplift,Hindu Religious Endowments,Registration and Prohibition in Kamaraj ministry. During 1958–62,he was a member of the Rajya Sabha –the upper house of the Indian parliament.
The Travancore Tamil Nadu Congress (TTNC) was a political party in the Indian state of Travancore-Cochin. The party was founded by Sam Nathaniel and led by A. Nesamony,both natives of Palliyadi.
Elections to the Legislative Assembly of the Indian state of Travancore-Cochin were held on 15 February 1954. 265 candidates competed for the 106 constituencies in the Assembly. There were 11 two-member constituencies and 95 single-member constituencies. Out of these,one single member and one two-member constituency was reserved for SC. The main contest in the election was between the Indian National Congress (INC) and the United Front of Leftists (UFL). Travancore Tamil Nadu Congress was also significant in some Tamil - significant constituencies.

The present-day Kanyakumari district and parts of Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu state in India was originally a part of the Travancore-Cochin state. Between 1945 and 1956,especially after the Government of India announced plans to reorganize states along linguistic lines,the people of Tamil-majority Kanyakumari campaigned for its inclusion in the Madras State instead of the Malayalam-majority Kerala state. In Tamil,the campaign is also known as Therkku Ellai Porattam.
