Winnipeg's Most is a Canadian hip hop group, made up of the MC's Jon-C (Billy Pierson), Charlie Fettah (Tyler Rogers), and formerly, Brooklyn (Jamie Prefontaine). [1] They were based in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Jon-C and Brooklyn are both Aboriginal artists, and the group was featured in the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation documentary series 8th Fire . [2] The group released two albums and a number of singles and videos, some of which were played on MuchMusic. The group won several Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards in 2010, including the award for Best New Artist, and they won six APCMA's in 2011. [3]

History

"Northside Connection"

In early June 2010, Winnipeg's Most released their first project to the public: a pre-album promotional mixtape titled "Northside Connection". The mixtape featured artists Blu, Ed E Buk, Zeek Illa, Bubblz, and Ladee Seduction (Jessica Bro-Z). Next, the group released two singles to the Winnipeg radio station Streetz FM: "All That I Know" [4] and "On These Streets." These songs hit number one on the station's top 10 chart, and the mixtape was downloaded thousands of times. [5] These initial singles spawned videos directed by Stuey Kubrick and received airplay on Canada's Much Music. [6] [7]

Self titled debut

For their debut album, Winnipeg's Most collaborated with the Juno nominated producers Stomp and Jay Mak of RezOfficial Music. The album was released in 2010 under the group's own label, Heatbag Records, in association with RezOfficial Music. The album featured Kobe, Ed E Buk, and Zeek Illa, and it featured the hit songs "All That I Know", "On These Streetz", and "What You In It For". Boogey the Beat co-produced one track with Stomp, titled "It's A Jungle Out Here". The group won 3 out of the 4 Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards that they were nominated for. [8]

Goodfellaz

Winnipeg's Most released their sophomore album under their label Heatbag Records in 2011. This record, titled Goodfellaz, featured artists Krizz Kaliko, The Rupness Monster, Ed E Buk, Zeek Illa, Bubblz, Big Slim, and Inez. This album won six Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards in the categories of Best Duo or Group, Best Producer/Engineer, Best Music Video, Best Album Cover Design, Best Rap/Hip-hop CD, and Single of the Year for "Don't Stop". Disbandment and death of Brooklyn

Winnipeg's Most disbanded after 2013. Jon-C was arrested that year after cocaine and other drugs were found in his home during a 2012 police raid. [11] [12] On September 22, 2015, Jamie Prefontaine (aka Brooklyn), died at the age of 30. [13] [14]

2024 Reunion Show

On March 28, 2024 at the Burton Cummings theatre in Winnipeg, the surviving member's of Winnipeg's Most performed a reunion show, which included in a tribute to Prefontaine (also known as Brooklyn). [15] Additionally, Rogers announced plans on his personal Instagram page for following unspecified shows to be performed in the summer of 2024. [16]

Heatbag Records

Heatbag Records was operated by the three members of Winnipeg's Most. Under this label, the group has released work by Bubblz, Ashley Blakk, the Rupness Monster, Blu, Zeek Illa n the River City Knight Ryderz, Jay Bird, Stattis, Lady Seduction, Drezus, Kid P, KiDD Kane and Charlie Stumble.

Myers also released four solo albums and discovered Soul for Real and Monifah.

Blending this with contemporary R&B and hip hop sensibilities, his music became characterized by this distinction, with other music industry artists such as Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Future, and Travis Scott utilizing it to a similar effect.

Olubowale Victor Akintimehin, better known by his stage name Wale, is an American rapper. He first became known for his 2006 song "Dig Dug ", which became popular in his hometown of Washington D.C. and led Wale to gain further local recognition as he amassed a number of follow-up releases. Wale signed with English DJ-producer Mark Ronson's Allido Records in 2007, and after a three-label bidding war, he entered a joint venture with Interscope Records for US$1.3 million the following year. During this time, Wale's mixtapes and singles saw national attention as he appeared on MTV and various Black America-focused magazines.

Eagle & Hawk is a Canadian First Nations rock group based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, active since 1994. They are most noted for winning the Juno Award for Best Music of Aboriginal Canada Recording in 2002 for their album On and On. The band had numerous members throughout its history, with guitarist Vince Fontaine as the primary and constant member.

Antoine Franklin McColister, known professionally Ace Hood, is an American rapper. Born in Port St. Lucie and raised in Deerfield Beach, Florida, he was discovered by disc jockey DJ Khaled and became the first act to sign with his record label, We the Best Music Group in 2008. <i>So Far Gone</i> (EP) 2009 EP by Drake

So Far Gone is the debut extended play by Canadian rapper and singer Drake. It was released on September 15, 2009 by Cash Money Records, Universal Motown Records and Young Money Entertainment. This is his reissued project from his third mixtape that was released earlier on February 13, 2009. This EP features five tracks from the mixtape, with the inclusions of two new songs. The EP features guest appearances from Trey Songz, Lil Wayne, Bun B and Young Jeezy. The EP was supported by three singles: "Best I Ever Had", "Successful" featuring Trey Songz and Lil Wayne, and "I'm Goin' In" featuring Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy. In April 2010, the EP won the Rap Recording of the Year at the 2010 Juno Awards.

Team Rezofficial was a Canadian aboriginal hip hop group. Founded by former members of War Party, the group included musicians Karmen "Hellnback" Omeasoo, Drezus, Jay Mak, Big Stomp, Lakes Aqui, Tomislav Milardovic and Big Slim.

Live. Love. ASAP is the debut mixtape by American rapper ASAP Rocky, who released it as a free digital download on October 31, 2011. It features production by Clams Casino, ASAP Ty Beats, DJ Burn One, and SpaceGhostPurrp, among others. The mixtape also features guest rappers Schoolboy Q and Fat Tony, as well as members of ASAP Mob, ASAP Rocky's hip hop collective.

Ritchie Acheampong, better known as Rich Kidd, is a Canadian hip hop recording artist, record producer and film/video director from Toronto, Ontario. He is a two-time nominee for the Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year as a solo artist, garnering nominations at the Juno Awards of 2013 for The Closers and at the Juno Awards of 2014 for In My Opinion. In 2013, he formed the project Naturally Born Strangers with collaborators Tona and Adam Bomb. That group's debut release, The Legends League Presents: Naturally Born Strangers, won the Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year at the Juno Awards of 2015.

Jon Kevin Freeman Jr., better known by his stage name Jon Connor, is an American rapper and record producer. Connor has released various mixtapes and an album effort during his career including the Jay-Z inspired The Blue Album, and the Eminem inspired The People's Rapper LP. His debut studio album, Unconscious State was released in 2013. Shortly thereafter, he was signed to Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment from 2013 to 2019, where he did not release an album. In 2015, he garnered notoriety for being featured on Dr. Dre's album Compton (2015) as well as The Game's album The Documentary 2.5 (2015).

JD Era is a Canadian rapper and lyricist. He has worked with artists such as Nas, Gza, Kardinal Offishall, The Clipse, and has also cut several tracks with longtime friend Drake. In 2008 he won Best Rap at the Toronto Independent Music Awards, and also won the TAG Records’ Survival of The Freshest competition. He has also released a number of mixtapes and singles, and in the Juno Awards of 2013 his album No Handouts was nominated for Rap Recording of the Year.

Drezus is Plains Cree rapper and activist based in Calgary, Alberta. Drezus' accomplishments in the field of music include awards for Best Music Video, Best Producer/Engineer, Best Rap/Hip Hop Album, and Indigenous Entertainer of the Year. These awards followed the success of his album, Indian Summer, released in the summer of 2014. However, Manitopyes' life was not always filled with awards and recognition. Growing up as a First Nations person, he faced multiple jail stints and violence in his life. Manitopyes has found meaning in his music and is working to share it with those who will listen.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Haviah Mighty</span> Canadian rapper (born 1992)

Haviah Mighty is a Canadian rapper from Brampton, Ontario. She rose to prominence in 2016 as a member of the hip hop group the Sorority, before releasing several EPs on her own, most notably Flower City, in 2017. Her first album, 13th Floor, was released in 2019 and won the Polaris Music Prize. After her debut, XXL named her one of the "15 Toronto rappers you should know" and CBC Music called her one of the "New Faces of Canadian Hip Hop".
