The 1960 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XVII Olympiad and commonly known as Rome 1960, were an international multi-sport event held from 25 August to 11 September 1960 in Rome, Italy. Rome had previously been awarded the administration of the 1908 Summer Olympics, but following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906, the city had no choice but to decline and pass the honour to London. The Soviet Union won the most gold and overall medals at the 1960 Games.
Valeriy Vasylyovych Pidluzhny was a long jumper who represented the Soviet Union. Born in Donetsk, Ukrainian SSR, he trained at the city's Trudovye Rezervy. A three-time Olympian, he won two silver medals at the European Athletics Indoor Championships as well as a gold medal at the 1974 European Athletics Championships and a bronze medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics. His personal best was 8.18 m, set in the 1980 Olympic final in Moscow.

A total of 45 events were contested, of which 23 by male and 22 by female athletes. The host country, China, took the most gold medals (9) and the most medals overall (16). The United States were a close second with a total of 8 golds. Five Universiade records were broken during the course of the athletics competition.

Chan Ming Tai, also known as Theophilius Chan, is an athlete from Hong Kong specialising in the long jump. He is coached by Ms Chan Wai Yin and Dr Anthony Giorgi. At the 2015 Summer Universiade he finished 4th with a jump of 7.89m (0.9). At the 2016 Asian Indoor Championships in Doha he won the bronze medal with a jump of 7.85m. At the 2017 Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar he won the silver medal with a jump of 8.03m.
Hugues Fabrice Zango is a Burkinabé athlete who specialises in the triple jump and the long jump. He is the world indoor record holder in the triple jump with a jump of 18.07 m set in 2021 and the reigning world champion, winning the gold medal in the triple jump at the 2023 World Championships. Zango competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and won the bronze medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, in the triple jump event, the first ever Olympic medal for Burkina Faso. He has also competed in World Championships, two African athletics championships, a Jeux de la Francophonie, two Summer Universiades and two African Games. He became the first-ever Olympic medalist for Burkina Faso earning a bronze medal and set the African triple jump record at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha.
Xu Xiaolong is a Chinese triple jumper. He won a bronze medal at the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea, and eventually represented his nation China at the 2016 Summer Olympics, finishing eleventh in the final round of the men's triple jump.
