Yara dos Santos (born 1979) is a Cape Verdean writer. [1]

Biography

Her first book Força de Mulher (Garrido Publishers, 2002), which relates her experience in her appearance in a Portuguese television programme Confiança Cega . [2] She later wrote Cabo Verde: Tradição e Sabores (Cape Verde: Tradition and Flavors) (Garrido Publishers, 2003), about the gastronomic tradition of her native land.

In 2006, she published Ildo Lobo, a voz crioula (Ildo Lobo: The Creole Voice), about the life and works of the Cape Verdean singer Ildo Lobo; it was first presented in Italy. [3]

Ildo Lobo was a famous Cape Verdean singer. His versatile and melodic voice, commanding stage presence and trademark beret hats made him one of the all-time great performers of Cape Verde. Always well known throughout the Cape Verde Islands, Lobo rose to international fame with his first solo work, "Nôs Morna", following it with another album "Intellectual".

<i>Claridade</i>

Claridade was a literary review inaugurated in 1936 in the city of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde. It was part of a movement of cultural, social, and political emancipations of the Cape Verdean society. The founding contributors were Manuel Lopes, Baltasar Lopes da Silva, who used the poetic pseudonym of Osvaldo Alcântara, and Jorge Barbosa, born in the Islands of São Nicolau, Santiago and São Vicente, respectively. The magazine followed the steps of the Portuguese neorealist writers, and contributed to the building of "Cape Verdeanity", an autonomous cultural identity for the archipelago.

Manuel António de Sousa Lopes was a Cape Verdean novelist, poet and essayist. With Baltasar Lopes da Silva and Jorge Barbosa he was a founder of the journal Claridade, which contributed to the rise of Cape Verdean literature. Manuel Lopes wrote in Portuguese, using expressions typical for Cape Verdean Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole. He was one of those responsible for describing world calamities of the droughts that caused several deaths in São Vicente and Santo Antão.

Rádio Barlavento local radio station in Cape Verde broadcast in the Portuguese language

Rádio Barlavento was a radio station in Cape Verde which broadcast in the Portuguese language from 1955 until 1974. It was a shortwave (CR4AC) station broadcasting on 3930 kHz. From 1947 until 1955 it was called Rádio Clube do Mindelo. In 1974 it was seized by members of the Partido Africano da Independência de Guiné-Bissau e Cabo Verde - PAIGC, who sought to "get the station out of hands of those who aligned with colonial power." After this the station became Radio Voz de Sao Vicente. The station served the entire Barlavento island group including Santo Antão, São Vicente, São Nicolau, Sal and Boa Vista. The station was located in a building near downtown Mindelo, which is now the Centro Nacional de Artesanato e Design, and broadcast Cape Verdean traditional music, local programs, and Portuguese and some international programming. Rádio Voz de São Vicente later became an affiliate of RCV, Mindelo's own station would have another separate one and would be named Ràdio Nova.

Adriano Gonçalves, known by his stage name Bana and called the "King of Morna", was a Cape Verdean singer and performer of the morna style, the plaintive, melodic lament which is a staple musical style of the country.

Orlanda Amarílis Lopes Rodrigues Fernandes Ferreira, known as Orlanda Amarílis was a Cape Verdean writer. She is considered to be a noteworthy writer of fiction whose main literary themes include perspectives on women’s writing, with depictions of various aspects of the lives of Cape Verdean women as well as depictions of the Cape Verdean diaspora. She has been described as "indisputably one of Cape Verde’s most talented writers".

Cinema of Cape Verde

The history of the cinema of Cape Verde dates back to the arrival of film-makers in Mindelo in the early twentieth-century. The first picture house was established in Mindelo around 1922, called Eden Park.

Os Tubarões was a Cape Verdean traditional music band who, along with Bulimundo, Finaçon and Simentera, were among the most famous music bands in Cape Verde. The band name is Portuguese for "the sharks" which are common in the waters surrounding the archipelago.

Avenida Amílcar Cabral street in Praia

Avenida Amílcar Cabral is an avenue in the Plateau, the historic centre of Praia, Santiago island, Cape Verde. It is the neighborhood's longest street and the main artery of the city centre. Formerly named Rua Sá da Bandeira after 19th century Portuguese politician Sá da Bandeira, it was renamed after Cape Verdean independence in honour of Amílcar Cabral, leader of the independence movement of Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau. It runs south to north in the western part of the Plateau, parallel to Rua 5 de Julho, Rua Serpa Pinto and Avenida Andrade Corvo. It forms the west side of Praça Alexandre Albuquerque.

Literature of Cape Verde

The Literature of Cape Verde is among the most important in West Africa, it is the second richest in West Africa after Mali and modern day Mauritania. It is also the richest in the Lusophony portion of Africa. Most works are written in Portuguese, but there are also works in Capeveredean Creole, French and notably English.

Manuel Ferreira was a Portuguese writer.

Ildo Augusto Dos Santos Lopes Fortes is a Cape Verdean clergyman and the second and current bishop of Mindelo.
