Yobe River river in Niger and Nigeria

The Yobe River, also known as the Komadougou Yobe or the Komadougou-Yobe, is a river in West Africa that flows into Lake Chad through Nigeria and Niger. Its tributaries include the Hadejia River, the Jama'are River, and the Komadugu Gana River. The river forms a small part of the international border between Niger and Nigeria.

In November 2014, two separate terrorist attacks took place in Potiskum in Yobe State, Nigeria. Both incidents involved suicide bombers, killing at least 61 people and injuring scores of others. In both cases, Boko Haram have been accused of carrying out the attacks.

On 6 July 2013, gunmen attacked a secondary school in Mamudo, Yobe State, Nigeria, killing at least 42 people. Most of the dead were students, with a few staff members also killed.

Yobes Ondieki is a former Kenyan 5000 m runner, who won the World Championships' gold medal in Tokyo 1991. In the same year he set a temporary Kenyan 5000 m record of 13:01.82 in Zurich. He participated in the Olympic finals of 1988 and 1992 but did not win a medal. He also was the first person to break 27:00 in the 10,000 m in 1993.

Dufuna Canoe is a canoe discovered in 1987 by a Fulani cattle herdsman a few kilometers from the village of Dufuna in the Fune Local Government Area, not far from the Komadugu Gana River, in Yobe State, Nigeria. Radiocarbon dating of a sample of charcoal found near the site dates the canoe at 8500 to 8000 years old, linking the site to Lake Mega Chad.

Damaturu prison break

The Damaturu prison break was an attack on the Jimeta prison at Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State in the northeastern Nigeria by 40 gunmen suspected to be members of the terrorist group Boko Haram. The attack is thought to have been a bid to rescue imprisoned members of Boko Haram. About 40 prisoners escaped from the prison; seven inmates and one prison warden died. The escaped prisoners were largely members of the insurgent.
