Operations
The chapters' primary operations are organising science shows and workshops. These target high school students, primary school students and the general public, and vary from hour-long activities to the three-day Santos Science Experience. Events are often run in partnership with universities, schools, museums, not-for-profits and corporate entities, by volunteers. Each chapter organises social events for its members. Popular socials include beach walks, Easter Egg hunts, Amazing Races, Game of Assassins and annual balls.
The National Conference is where members of each committee come together to discuss each chapter's challenges and opportunities, and to provide direction for YSA as a body. The conference is held annually and runs for two to three days.
Chapters
YSA Adelaide
YSA Adelaide is the most recently founded chapter, with its inaugural meeting occurring in December 2009.
Major events include:
- Science Alive at the Adelaide Show Grounds in August;
- National Science Week Events; and
- The Santos Science Experience at South Australian Universities.
The YSA Adelaide Chapter has a strong focus on outreach to school children and runs library workshops and school workshops, as well as science-themed socials and education and training.

YSA Brisbane
YSA Brisbane is the founding chapter of YSA and in turn the oldest chapter in Australia. It was founded in 1991 after a group of excited youths attended the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) program in Canberra and decided to form a club afterwards to remain in touch. The chapter has always had a heavy focus on science activities that provide volunteering opportunities for its members.
Yearly events include:
- Helping out at local Science and Engineering Challenges;
- Running activities at the World Science Festival in Brisbane;
- Attending Griffith and University of Queensland Open Days;
- Attending events throughout National Science Week, like at the Queensland Museum; and
- Annual training weekends.
It runs monthly socials for its members. Notable socials have included:
- Visits to various rock climbing, ice skating and bounce/inflatable venues;
- Various themed Grand Balls;
- The annual Newbies Welcome BBQ; and
- The annual Christmas trivia.
YSA Brisbane provides staff to three 'The Santos Science Experiences'. These include the January UQ program, the Griffith, UQ and QUT combined programs as well as the September Gold Coast program.
YSA Melbourne
YSA Melbourne was founded in 1991 and has been offering social events, professional development workshops, and staffing opportunities to those with an interest, curiosity, and/or passion of science ever since.

It also produces cross-platform science communication content and creates custom-designed science support programs for high schools and universities to engage a wider audience in science and encourage students to study STEM.

YSA Sydney
YSA Sydney runs Science Shows and workshops for audiences ranging from primary school students, to tertiary students, to the general public. The chapter also provides volunteers for science outreach events organised by partner organisations. The chapter focuses its operations within Sydney but has run events in Wollongong.
Major events include:
- Science Schools: The Santos Science Experience and the Gifted and Talented Program, both headed by the University of Sydney;
- YSA Sydney's own annual Presentation and Science Show Training (PaSST) program; and
- The socials program for the biennial Professor Harry Messel International Science School (ISS).
The University of Queensland is a public research university located primarily in Brisbane, the capital city of the Australian state of Queensland. Founded in 1909 by the Queensland parliament, UQ is one of the six sandstone universities, an informal designation of the oldest university in each state. UQ is also a founding member of edX, Australia's leading Group of Eight and the international research-intensive Association of Pacific Rim Universities.
Griffith University is a public research university in South East Queensland on the east coast of Australia. The university was founded in 1971, but was not officially opened until 1975. Griffith University is credited with introducing Australia's first degrees in environmental science and Asian studies. The university has five campuses, at Gold Coast, Nathan, Logan, South Bank, and Mount Gravatt. A sixth campus, to be located at the Treasury Building in the Brisbane CBD, will open in 2027. The university was named after Sir Samuel Walker Griffith, who was twice Premier of Queensland and the first Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia. Sir Samuel Griffith played a major role in the Federation of Australia and was the principal author of the Australian Constitution.
Central Queensland University is an Australian public university based in central Queensland. CQUniversity is the only Australian university with a campus presence in every mainland state. Its main campus is at Norman Gardens in Rockhampton, however, it also has campuses in Adelaide (Wayville), Brisbane, Bundaberg (Branyan), Cairns, Emerald, Gladstone, Mackay, Melbourne, Noosa, Perth, Rockhampton City, Sydney and Townsville. CQUniversity also partners with university centres in several regional areas across Australia.
Melbourne High School is a government-funded single-sex academically selective secondary day school for boys, located in the Melbourne suburb of South Yarra, Victoria, Australia. Established in 1905, the school caters for boys from Year 9 to Year 12.
The Australian Space Research Institute (ASRI) was formed 1991 with the merger of the AUSROC Launch Vehicle Development Group at Monash University, Melbourne and the Australian Space Engineering Research Association (ASERA).
The National Association of Australian University Colleges Inc (NAAUC) is the peak representative body for students living on Australian tertiary campuses. As a non-profit association, NAAUC aims to coordinate communication between a network of residences on a national scale, foster goodwill amongst association members, and liaise with college heads and administration in order to provide the best possible advice and referral to Australian colleges, residential halls of residences and student villages.
Supanova Comic Con & Gaming is a fan convention focusing on science fiction and fantasy film and TV, comic books, anime, gaming and collectables. It is held annually in the Australian cities of Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and the Gold Coast.
Warrane College UNSW is an affiliated residential college at the University of New South Wales, Australia. The name of the college is derived from the Aboriginal word for the Sydney Cove area, "Warrang", highlighting the recognition by Warrane and UNSW of Australia's indigenous people as original inhabitants of the land on which they are located. In 2021, Warrane celebrated 50 years since its official opening.
Students of Sustainability (SoS) is an annual conference of the Australian student environment and social justice movement and predates the Australian Student Environment Network (ASEN). The first Students of Sustainability conference was held at ANU in 1991 when it was called Students, Science and Sustainability. The name changed in 1995 to Students and Sustainability and then again in 2003 to Students of Sustainability. In each case the name changes were to make the conference open to a wider range of participants. Students of Sustainability always runs in July co-currently with NAIDOC week, Aboriginal and Islander politics and affairs play a major part in the SOS program.
The Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science (ANZAAS) is an organisation that was founded in 1888 as the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science to promote science.
Concordia College (CC) is an ELC–12 independent, co-educational, Lutheran school with campuses located in the Highgate and Blackwood areas of Adelaide, South Australia. Established in 1890, the college is a school of the Lutheran Church of Australia and has been an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School since January 2001, offering the IB Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes.
International House is a residential college situated on the St Lucia campus of the University of Queensland. IH provides fully catered accommodation for 200 undergraduate students, and self-catered accommodation for 38 postgraduate and mature-aged undergraduate students. Residents who live at IH are affectionately known around campus as 'Housies'.
The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) was established in 2002 for collaboration in the mathematical sciences to strengthen mathematics and statistics, especially in universities.
The UQ Law School is the law school of the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Founded in 1936, UQ law school is the sixth oldest law school in Australia and the oldest operating in Queensland.
Robogals is an international student-run organisation that aims to inspire, engage and empower young women to consider studying engineering and related fields. Its primary activity is interactive, engineering based workshops for girls aged between 8-18. Robogals has chapters at 25 universities across the world including Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Kenya, South Africa, New Zealand, Indonesia and the Philippines. These chapters fall into three regions - Robogals Asia Pacific, Robogals EMEA, and Robogals North America.
There are eleven residential colleges of the University of Queensland.
The University of Queensland Debating Society (UQDS) is the debating society of the University of Queensland. It has been recognised as one of the oldest and most active student societies at the University of Queensland and one of the most active and successful university debating societies in the world. The UQ Debating Society was also a founding member of the University of Queensland Union.
The Institute of Modern Languages, also known as IML-UQ, is a language and translation institute located within the St Lucia campus of the University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane, Australia. Today IML-UQ enrolls 3000 plus students annually in all of its language programs.
The Australian Medical Students' Association (AMSA) is an independent association of the 17,000 medical students in Australia. AMSA was formed in 1960 in Brisbane, as a conference organised to network medical students from Australia. It has since grown to become the peak representative body for Australia's medical students—serving a mandate to connect, inform and represent medical students in Australia. Its tri-annual Council meetings include representatives from medical societies at each of Australia's 23 medical schools.
Gladstone State High School is a coeducational public secondary school based in West Gladstone, a suburb of Gladstone in the Gladstone Region in Queensland, Australia. The school has a total enrolment of more than 1500 students per year, with an official count of 1552 students in August 2020.
