Žiri is a town in northwestern Slovenia. It is the administrative centre of the Municipality of Žiri, created in 1994. Prior to this the town belonged administratively to the area of Škofja Loka.
Boris Strel was a Slovenian alpine skier. He was born in Žiri, Slovenia. In December 1981, Strel took the only Slovenian top-level win in men's giant slalom in the 1982 Alpine Skiing World Cup competition in Cortina d'Ampezzo. He ended his career after the 1984/85 season due to problems with his spine and was later active as a ski school and a ski repair shop owner. Strel committed suicide on 28 March 2013.

Although it is easily accessible by road only from the Žiri side, which is in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia, it actually lies in the Municipality of Idrija in the traditional Littoral region.

Žirovski Vrh is a dispersed settlement in the hills east of Žiri in the Upper Carniola region of Slovenia. It is made up of isolated farmsteads and small hamlets on the southeastern slopes of a range called Žiri Peak. The dispersed nature of the settlement on the hill continues into the neighbouring Municipality of Gorenja Vas–Poljane with the settlements of Žirovski Vrh Svetega Antona and Žirovski Vrh Svetega Urbana on its northern slopes.
