The 13th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly was the 20th assembly of the territorial government and it lasted from 1995 to 1999. This assembly was dissolved due to the creation of Nunavut.

Nunavut Territory of Canada

Nunavut is the newest, largest, and most northerly territory of Canada. It was separated officially from the Northwest Territories on April 1, 1999, via the Nunavut Act and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act, though the boundaries had been drawn in 1993. The creation of Nunavut resulted in the first major change to Canada's political map since incorporating the province of Newfoundland in 1949.

Permanently located in Yellowknife since 1993, the assembly was founded in 1870 and became active in 1872 with the first appointments from the Government of Canada.

The 1st Council of the North-West Territories also known as the North-West Council in Canada lasted from October 7, 1876, to 1888. It was created as a permanent replacement to the Temporary North-West Council which existed prior to 1876 and was replaced by the 1st North-West assembly when the quota of elected members was reached. The numerical denomination 1st was applied when the 2nd Council of the Northwest Territories was created to differentiate between the two councils.

15th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly

The 15th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly is the 23rd sitting legislature or council in Northwest Territories history. It lasted from 2003 until September 3, 2007. The primary membership was elected in the 2003 Northwest Territories general election. There were 2 by-elections conducted during the interim.

The Politics of Northwest Territories involves not only the governance of the Northwest Territories but also the social, economic and political issues specific to the territory. This includes matters relating to local governance and governance by the federal government of Canada, the inclusion of the aboriginal population in territorial affairs, and the matter of official languages for the territory.

The 4th Northwest Territories Legislative Council was the 11th assembly of the territorial government. It lasted from 1960 to 1964.

The 7th Northwest Territories Legislative Council was the 14th assembly of the territorial government. The council lasted from 1970 to 1975 and was the last council to have appointed members.

The 8th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly was the 15th assembly of the territorial government. The assembly lasted from 1975 until 1979. This was the first all elected council of the Northwest Territories since the 5th North West Assembly from 1902 to 1905, in honor of this achievement the Council renamed themselves the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories despite still being officially called the Council of the Northwest Territories under the Northwest Territories Act.

The 11th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly was the 18th assembly of the territorial government from 1987 to 1991.

The 12th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly was the 19th assembly of the territorial government and lasted from 1991 until it was dissolved in 1995.

The 14th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly was the 22nd assembly of the territorial government. This assembly lasted from 1999 until its dissolution in 2003. This was the first assembly in the new Northwest Territories that was split in half to create Nunavut. As a result of division membership dropped from 24 to 19 seats with the political map being radically altered.

The 16th Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly is the 24th sitting legislature in Northwest Territories history. The membership of this Assembly was decided by the 2007 Northwest Territories general election held on October 1, 2007 to elect 19 members.
