Lewis Alan Hoad was an Australian tennis player whose career ran from 1950 to 1973. Hoad won four Major singles tournaments as an amateur. He was a member of the Australian team that won the Davis Cup four times between 1952 and 1956. Hoad turned professional in July 1957. He won the Kooyong Tournament of Champions in 1958 and the Forest Hills Tournament of Champions in 1959. He won the Ampol Open Trophy world series of tournaments in 1959, which included the Kooyong tournament that concluded in early January 1960. Hoad's men's singles tournament victories spanned from 1951 to 1971.

The 1953 Wimbledon Championships took place on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. The tournament was held from Monday 22 June until Saturday 4 July 1953. It was the 67th staging of the Wimbledon Championships, and the third Grand Slam tennis event of 1953. Vic Seixas and Maureen Connolly won the singles titles.

The 1955 Wimbledon Championships took place on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. The tournament was held from Monday 20 June until Saturday 2 July 1955. It was the 69th staging of the Wimbledon Championships, and the third Grand Slam tennis event of 1955. Tony Trabert and Louise Brough won the singles titles.

Third-seeded Ken Rosewall defeated Mervyn Rose 6–0, 6–3, 6–4 in the final to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1953 Australian Championships.

In the 1954 Wimbledon Championships – Gentlemen's Singles competition, Jaroslav Drobný defeated Ken Rosewall in the final, 13–11, 4–6, 6–2, 9–7 to take the gentlemen's singles tennis title. It was Drobný's third singles final and second win at Wimbledon. Vic Seixas was the defending champion, but lost in the quarterfinals to Budge Patty.

In the 1955 Wimbledon Championships men's singles event, Tony Trabert defeated Kurt Nielsen in the final, 6–3, 7–5, 6–1 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title. Jaroslav Drobný was the defending champion but lost in the quarterfinals to Tony Trabert.

Ken McGregor and Frank Sedgman were the defending champions, but were ineligible to compete after turning professional.
