Edward John Patty, better known as Budge Patty, was an American world no. 1 tennis player whose career spanned a period of 15 years after World War II. He won two Grand Slam singles titles in 1950. He was the second American male player to win the Channel Slam and one of only three as of 2021.

The 1957 Wimbledon Championships took place on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. The tournament was held from Monday 24 June until Saturday 6 July 1957. It was the 71st staging of the Wimbledon Championships, and the third Grand Slam tennis event of 1957. Lew Hoad and Althea Gibson won the singles titles.

Bob Falkenburg defeated John Bromwich in the final 7–5, 0–6, 6–2, 3–6, 7–5 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1948 Wimbledon Championships. Jack Kramer was the defending champion, but was ineligible to compete after turning professional at the end of the 1947 season.

Budge Patty defeated Frank Sedgman in the final, 6–1, 8–10, 6–2, 6–3 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1950 Wimbledon Championships. Ted Schroeder was the defending champion, but decided not to play.

In the 1951 Wimbledon Championships – Gentlemen's Singles tennis competition, Dick Savitt defeated Ken McGregor in the final, 6–4, 6–4, 6–4 to win the title. He was the second ever American to win the Wimbledon and Australian tournaments in the same year. Number 4 seed Budge Patty was the defending champion, but lost in the second round to another American, the unseeded 17-year-old Ham Richardson.

In the 1952 Wimbledon Championships – Gentlemen's Singles tennis competition, number one seed Frank Sedgman defeated number two seed Jaroslav Drobný in the final, 4–6, 6–2, 6–3, 6–2 to win the title. Dick Savitt was the defending champion, but lost in the quarterfinals to Mervyn Rose.

In the 1953 Wimbledon Championships – Gentlemen's Singles, second seed Vic Seixas defeated the unseeded Kurt Nielsen in the final, 9–7, 6–3, 6–4, to take the gentlemen's singles tennis title. Frank Sedgman was the defending champion, but was ineligible to compete after turning professional.

In the 1954 Wimbledon Championships – Gentlemen's Singles competition, Jaroslav Drobný defeated Ken Rosewall in the final, 13–11, 4–6, 6–2, 9–7 to take the gentlemen's singles tennis title. It was Drobný's third singles final and second win at Wimbledon. Vic Seixas was the defending champion, but lost in the quarterfinals to Budge Patty.

Cooper had to play 332 games to win the title, the most of any male champion in the history of the tournament.
